My 2 yr old just had her 2nd VCUG. Last one was 6 months ago. She has VUR grade 3. This time her uroligists office did the procedure rather than at the hospital. They didnt fill her bladder up all the way and must have ripped her or somethin down there, cause she cries and says hurts and crosses her legs when she pees. They also didnt have her urinate afterwards. I didnt get to go in with her casue i am pregnant so my husband went in. They totally screwed up and got no results. She cried for 25 minutes. Then they prescribed a pain medication that cost $30 and also said she was constipated, which i knew and was working on. So now they want her to take a laxitive everyday for 6 months along with anitbiotics for another 6 months till she will be retested at the hospital with sedation. So my question is has anyone delt with a situation when a hospital or doctors office screwed up? I dont think we should have to pay for the VCUG or the pain medication. Last time she had the VCUG she had no pain afterwards. Do thin k she needs to be sedated? Would you want the test redone now or wait the 6 months?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

NOW SHE HAS A UTI AND IS STILL CRYING WHEN SHE URINATES 5 DAYS AFTER THE PROCEDURE. tTHIS IS HORRIBLE! I've scheduled an appointment with her ped on Wed to discuss everything with him. He also wants to do a weight check and blood test. She's small and anemic too. We will not be going back to that urologist office again. We didnt even see her reg urolIogist, and they didnt tell us we werent seeing him. I also found out the doctor doubled her antibiotic she was all ready on and gave it to her again. So for 2 days till i figured it out she was on 3 x as much antibiotic that she normally would have taken. I thought it was the laxitive. Thanks for the help ladies!

I do not know what VCUG is or VUR.
However, does the hospital have a customer relations office.
And/or a social worker(s) office.
Start there and see if they can help you.
If they can't, talk to an attorney.

It sounds like you are guessing about a lot of this. You need to know if they actually screwed up or if this sometimes happens. If it sometimes happens you need to know why it happened with your daughter. To get answers you need to talk with her doctor. First the urologist and then her pediatrician to whom the urologist would've sent a report.

Approach your conversation in a non-accusatory manner so that you will get truthful and complete answers. IF you accuse him from the start he is going to be defensive and more careful with his answers.

You did not go in with her. How observant and knowledgeable is your husband? Why weren't they able to finish the procedure? I read that feces in the bowel can interfere with the test. Can you be sure they didn't have her urinate afterwards? Urinating is part of the test. I've had that procedure and didn't have a choice about urinating. The water just came out. I doubt that she could hold it in. If she did that would cause pain and would hardly be the fault of the doctor, tho they should know how to handle that.

I recommend that you learn more about the procedure and talk with the urologist with an open mind before attempting to make accusations and asking for monetary exclusions. What you've told us here does not indicate that anyone screwed up. It indicates you need some answers from the doctor.

My 4 month old also has VUR. She has had 2 VCUGs and various other scans. As far as waiting the 6 months and having it done with sedation, probably, they want wait for your daughter's benefit, give her time to heal from the pain and not be as scared. Seeing them do the VCUG on my 4 month old makes me wonder how they would be able to do it on a 2 year old. My 2 year old is way too wiggly. As hard as it is to see your kids secdated, sometimes it is better than having them terrified and in pain. (My 2 year old has had 3 major surgeries so I can relate to not wanting them to be sedated). My only advice is if you think the Drs screwed up, ask your Ped for a referral to another Dr. The Urologist my 4 month old has been seeing acted like I couldn't do anything and was pretty cocky so we are switching. You probably don't HAVE to see the same one. Then you will have a second opinion and hopefully feel more comfortable with the decision. Good luck!

My initial concern would be for you to find a NEW DOCTOR that knows what he/she is doing. It obviously should be a pediatric urologist who knows how to treat a very small child. I agree that you shouldn't have to pay for the test if it didn't yield any results---and the poor girl has obviously been traumatized. Also, when doctors start recommending children be on antibiotics and laxatives for 6 months---I would be questioning where they got their license. My daughter's pediatrician wanted her to go on antibiotics for 3 months for recurring ear infections (never got rid of the fluid). I disagreed---but took the Rx home. Then I went straight to the vitamin store in town. The woman there recommended some kind of natural drop that got rid of the ear infections AND the fluid---permanently! You might want to seek someone like that out---but make sure they know what they are talking about. Good luck!
