Hello All, My husband wants to go on a road trip this summer. His idea of fun is to drive to California, that seems like forever to me in the car. He's talking about stopping in Denver and then at the Grand Canyon. Another idea he threw out was to go to Mt. Rushmore, that seems a little more doable to me. I'm just wondering what kind of wonderful sight seeing/fun adventure types of things any of you have found.

Our experience was that my 8 and 10 year olds found Mt Rushmore to be boring and didn't appreciate it. They however love Washington DC, San Antonio, the Dells in Wisconsin and of course Florida.
I love road trips! We grew up roadtripping as my mom is from Manitoba. We also drove up to Mt. Rushmore on one of our trips that went from there across to Yellowstone, then Seattle, then Glacier Park, then to Saskatchewen and Manitoba and back to KC. I was 15 at the time, and I thought Mt. Rushmore was pretty cool actually, and the Black Hills were scenic, but there's not a lot to do there when you get there. But there are places to stop along the way, too, so it depends on how long your trip will be. Between KC and Mt. Rushmore, you can stop at the Corn Palace in Iowa and Wall Drug in South Dakota. I think we went through Sturgis, too? I can't remember if that was west of Mt. Rushmore, though. You could even stop in Omaha at the zoo.
My favorite driving destination is Colorado. You can go to Denver, CO Springs, Estes Park or any of the resorts.
We have also done the drive to the east coast - there's a ton to see so if you have time for a longer trip, that would be what I'd suggest. Everything's really close together, too. I loved Philadelphia and NYC.

i bet you get a LOT of responses to this lol. just to share our favorite places, omaha, and atlanta, and pensacola florida. san antonio texas too. different drive lengths, but all have good fun family oriented things to do. get online too! you can find out TONS of things just by googling a city. the internet can be invaluable with something like this. good luck and HAVE FUN! (i would definitely agree to the length of the trip with hubby FIRST...there's nothing to ruin a good vacation like being over scheduled and rushed!)
Most people would rather fly and get somewhere quick then drive. I for one love to drive. I think your sons would enjoy some of the things your husband spoke of seeing. Mr. Rushmore was way cool, also the grand Canyon is awesome they now has a plexi glass ledge that is ran by the local indians which allows you to walk out over the canyon. I am scared of hight's and wouldn't but my boys might. It does cost but maybe worth it. What I liked about driving is I could bring all my "stuff" and enjoy the scenery too. It amazes me how each states scenery is a little different. Maybe you could look up or have the boys look up some facts about the states you will be traveling through. Make it an adventure sit back and enjoy the ride. I love living in the USA and being able to travel through it and see more of it I appreciate it so much more.
South Dakota is another place we traveled and it too was good for the boys. One of the things we did in South Dakota that will forever stick in my mind was go to Flintstone Village. It isn't much and we arrived late so hardly anyone was there. We all let our hair down and had a ball. At the end was a little train behind the gift shop that you can ride. Didn't think it would be too fun but why not. I didn't take in the fact that a teenager would be in charge of the train and took the rails at full blast. The boys loved it. I however was glad to see the end coming up only to hear the kid yell lets do it again and off we went for another hair raising ride. Also there is reptile gardens in South Dekota I hope its still there. This has been several years since we made this trip and our sons were about the same age has yours, I loved every minute of it. Keep in mind this will be a memory that will last and make it fun. The drive can be long but it is what you make of it. Good Luck!
