Hi Moms! I have 2 rubbermaid step stools (one is white & one is grey) that my children use in the guest bath & their bathroom. Does anyone know what type of paint I can use to paint these ugly step stools to give it some personality with out it chipping?
Krylon spray paint- used it on my rubber maid storage lids and it looks great (that was 6 years ago). You could paint the whole thing then decorate after, or you could make stencils and just paint little things.
I don't recommend attempting to paint Rubbermaid. I would find a pretty pattern of Contac paper, and cut it to fit your stools. Or if you have a chance to head up to IKEA, they have a cute white and blue stool that we use for dirt cheap. The time saved on that might be worth it.
If you rough up the surfaces with sandpaper and then use Glidden's Gripper Grey Primer, or Zinser 1-2-3 Primer....then you can put a top coat of anything you want...oil or latex, just make sure that it is somewhat shiney...like a satin or semi-gloss finish. Hope that is helpful.

As an artist who is constantly redecorating, I can help with this. The first thing you want to do is lightly sand the surface of the stool to make it a little porous. Then you can use any paint, depending on whether you want a gloss of flat finish. What makes it usable is the finish you use. There are many different types of gloss finishes you can get. I would reccommend something for high traffic areas, like a polyeurathane coating. I use the kind that you would put onto a hardwood floor. You can get this at any store that sells paint products. You will want to apply several coats. Once it is dry, it will have a finish that will protect your artwork but allow your children to use the stool for a long time before it starts to wear.

Very simple process. Buy "Rustoleum" spray paint cans. Select the kind depending on if your stools are plastic or metal. Some Rustoleums are designed for both from one can.
Many colors to choose from. You can use painters tape to section off stipes, or other design if you are creative. Use newspaper to help cover the areas you section off with painters tape. Priming the surface is best, and you can even get the primer in spray paint as well. Use a flat finish for priming then choose from satin, to high gloss for your finished look in the color you choose.
They have plastic paint @ Home Depot. I used it on an outside playhouse and it did great. It comes in all sorts of colors!
if you don't want to spray paint, find any paint labeled enamel.
I'm not sure if it's Krylon Plastikote or Rustoleum Plasticote. All I know is it works the best on plastic.
I was going to say the same thing about the special plastic paint. I think they have it at Wal-mart too. Also, I would recommend cleaning them well and using a very fine grit sandpaper to rough up the surface first so the paint will adhere!
