Twin Pregnancy with Only One Heathy Fetus

I conceived twins via IVF, however only one of my little angels is healthy enough to make thru the entire pregnancy. The doctor was vague as to what will happen to my sick angel. Will my body re-absorb him? Will he hang out and keep my other angel company? I'm only 8 weeks and go back for another ultrasound on Wednesday. Has anyone every experienced this?

D.,

I want to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. I was carrying twins during one of my pregnancies. I had started spotting and had an ultasound. One of my babies was growing and one was not. They kept an eye on the situation, and when I had an ultasound later, they had only found one baby. My body had re-absorb my other baby. Stay safe. God Bless. :o)

D., I also will not be able to provide you with a specific answer. All I know is that your body will not re-absorb him. There are probably a few options, but you have to specifically ask your doctor about them. If he seems to be uncomfortable with the situation - get another opinion from a different doctor, but I am sure that your doctor should have experience with such a situation. Just keep asking.
My warmest sympathy to you and your family.

although I have not experienced that personally... I do know a few ladies that went through it. the long and the short of it is that you're body will decide what to do. depending on how "sick" the other one might determine if that lil angel hangs out (as you put it) or gets re-absorbed. [[I'll have you in my prayers either way]]

if you have questions and your doc is being too vague... tell the doc that you feel he/she is being too vague and that you'd like a more direct answer.

I am a twin mom (and I'm also a twin). if you live in nassau there's a great club... NASSAU COUNTY MOTHER'S OF TWINS CLUB (www.ncmotc.org)... we have meetings every 3rd tuesday of the month in Hickville if you're interested... there are other ladies in the club that have done IVF and may be able to relate and offer some advice/words of wisdom. (if you don't live in the area... you could try to find the twins club in your area)

GOOD LUCK... I'M SENDING POSITIVE VIBES YOUR WAY!

I am sorry to hear this happened to you. If the unhealthy baby has already lost a heartbeat, then your body will reabsorb it since you are only 8 weeks. I am thinking of you and your healthy baby.

i'm very sorry that you have to go through this. i myself haven't had to deal with this exact problem. i did have a miscarriage at 11 weeks though, and the dr's said they would have to take it because my body wouldn't do it itself. a woman i knew had 5 pregnancies (that i know of) and 3 of them were twins...i think she said that with 2 of the 3 only 1 survived, and that both that didn't survive passed very early (like yours). unfortunately, i don't know if the baby just "hung out" like you said, or if her body aborted it (passed it, or pushed it out of her body, i really don't know the right way to describe this), or if her dr. had to take the baby that didn't make it. but she did say things worked out each time, and while it's a hard thing to deal with, looking at your child will always bring a smile to your face, and a little glimpse of the other. best wishes to you and your children. god bless.
