Turning 40 and Need Some New Products

Good morning,

Okay - so like it or not, I turned 40 this week. I think it is time to visit the section of the drugstore where they sell the anti-aging products for your face. What products do you like - what works best? I can't spend tons of money and will not be doing surgery or injections but want to do something!!!

I'm not sure it matters, but I have naturally oily skin and am still fighting the same acne from my teen years so I don't want products that are too greasy.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
C.

I LOVE marykay products! They have a skincare line called Timewise that is wonderful! It IS kinda expensive but if you want you could sign up to be a distributor and you get everything half price! (plus it only costs $100 to sign up and you get LOTS of product for that!) Tahey also have other stuff you can use along with it, like anti-wrinkle cream and lots of eye products!)
(I am not trying to sell it to you btw, I don't sell it, I just like their stuff!)
Good luck!

I know! Acne and gray hairs at the same time is unfair!! :D

I'm overwhelmed by the choices. I plan on buying the book "Don't Go to the Cosmetic Counter Without Me". I see this author every year on TV shows like Good Morning America, The View, etc.

The book researches and rates thousands of products and publishes the results. They also look at the ingredients in products and educate you.

I figure let them do the homework and spend the money on trial & error.
Here's a link to the book.

I've noticed a couple of related questions here from women who say they are "aging" at 30 or 40 and need to know what products to use. It's making me a bit paranoid. I guess I'll have to ask my friends if my face/skin is scary or what? I'm 50 and my skincare is pretty basic (Clinique 3-step) and I use no special "anti-aging" creams at all. All of us will have wrinkles, no creams or lotions will make them go away. I can't see spending a lot of money on things that are overpriced and might make my skin irritated or break out. I exercise a lot and eat pretty well, though by no means meet the 5+ servings a day thing. I have a few lines around my eyes and mouth, but I just work on making them smile lines and not frowning ones.

"Women spend an extraordinary amount of money on cosmetics--$45 billion a year in the U.S. alone." Shouldn't this make us stop and think?

And thanks Lisa G. I just bought the book you recommended (Amazon used for $.01)! And maybe after reading this I'll invest in an under-eye cream or something...

Hi C.,
Happy Birthday! 40 is a good age to start thinking about anti-aging skin care. But, the drugstore isn't the only - or the best - place to shop for those products. They DO have the brand names we know because we've all been inundated with their advertising. But, popular doesn't mean best quality.

I think the place to start is with a healthy lifestyle. Beauty starts on the inside. Eat well - lots of fruits and veggies and cut back on red meat, sugar and white flour. Drink lots of water and less soda and sugary fruit drinks. Take your vitamins every day - and make them GOOD vitamins, not the ones on sale at Wal-Mart.

Next, stay out of the sun. Baking your skin in the sun leads to a leathery look, wrinkles and skin cancer down the road. And use a sunscreen every day, even for a few minutes in the sun when you're dashing from the house to the car.

And finally, anti-aging skin care products . . .
I recommend Enfuselle, a brand I've used for 7 years. I don't wear makeup every day, but I always take a few minutes in the morning and the evening to take care of my face and neck. The products are top quality and go a long way. If you're interested, you'll find links on my profile page. Just click my name above this message, then click the Business tab.

Good luck. Let me know if I can help you with your decision.

Hi C., I'm 42 and still deal w/ break-outs, too. I started using NeoStrata Gel Plus AHA 15 about 1.5 to 2 years ago and I can't say enough about it. You can buy it online and although a bit pricey (it's in the $30 range) one bottle lasts me for about 6 months, so I'd call that a steal, really. I've recommended it to so many people. It has diminished my fine lines significantly and I rarely break out now. It's really been a godsend! The excellent reviews online were what prompted me to initially try it out

http://reviews.skinstore.com/7554/650/neostrata-lotion-pl...

p.s. it has 15% glycolic acid so unless you are already on a glycolic regimen, you need to begin using this product very sparingly. In fact, may want to begin by using the lines lower glycolic formulas. Good luck!

Marilyn said it best. What you put in your body will make a HUGE difference. Sugar, animal products and processed foods age your skin badly.
Staying out of the sun helps. So does eating lots of fresh, moisture rich foods. Avocados, apples, berries, whole grains, lots of veggies are really important in keeping young and healthy.
Happy birthday

My mom sells Avon and they have some really good creams. Their product is called Anew. They have 3 areas/ age ranges.

If you don't have an AVON lady, you can order it on line and have it delivered to your house for $3.00 per order. The best part is that if you decide you don't like it you can return it for a refund.

Hi C.---I would like to suggest that you start your skin care regimen from the inside out...with your diet. I've been studying wellness and nutrition for several years now, taking classes from a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition as well as from many prevention minded physicians. We've actually talked about studies on skincare, and, the more fruit and vegetables that you eat (it is recommended that we eat 10+ servings each day), the healthier EVERY cell in your body will be, and that includes the skin, our largest organ.

Here is a link to an article by an expert we've recently worked with:
http://www.fitnessjp.com/023_34_beyond+skin-deep+beauty+a....

If you can't, won't or don't get the recommended servings of fruits and veggies every day, there is a research driven product available that is made of 15 juiced and dehydrated juice powders. Those that have skin issues report incredible changes in a short period of time. Everyone has this incredibly healthy glow.

What I am learning is that unless we grow our own food that we eat every day, we are likely deficient in nutrients...food is not vine-ripened so that is withstands long distance shipping, is starts to deteriorate as soon as it's picked, the growing cycle is accelerated in order to get more crops out of the field and natural crop rotations do not occur any longer, resulting in soil that is depleted of potential nutrients. But vitamins do NOT give the body what it needs compared to whole food. In any case, strive to eat even more fruits and veggies...mostly fruits and veggies, and you should see changes in your skin, as well as hair, nails, immune system function, energy levels, and weigh normalization.

Anyway, sorry about being a bit off topic. If I can be of any additional assistance, please let me know. It is my honor to help. Be well, D.

Go see a dermatologist. I was still battling acne, I'm 39, and she prescribed a face wash called Glytone..I use the mild cream wash..It works like a charm, have only gotten like 2 or three zits in two years, plus it gently exfoliates your skin...It has never looked better in my life..

C., I'm 41 and I'm going through the same thing. At one point I was having a few too many pimples which I thought was abnormal. I tried over the counter creams and washes, which weren't working. So, my first and best suggestion is go see a dermatologist who can prescribe something just right for your skin. Even the right sunblock for your skin is a must, otherwise your complexion will not have the right glow. I'm due to see one next week. It's got to the point where I can't manage it anymore.
I hope you have better luck than me.

If you still have acne look into your digestive system which is your 2nd brain. Get your gut in check and you will see a turnaround of your skin which is telling you what is going on inside.

At your age (I'm 41) you can still keep it a bit simple. The super duper anti aging creams have so much stuff in them, they could do more harm than good I think. Look for the products with sunscreen and SOME anti aging focus, but not super duper deluxe. I just got the L'Oreal Youth Code Daily lotion SPF30 from CVS and love it. I'm prone to break out and have sort of oily skin. I read labels for like an hour and decided on it. I like it way better than whatever I got last time. I like my Olay Regenerist night cream, but I don't use it every night. You do want your skin to take care of itself to an extent. At our age it's more about nutrition, water and sleep!

I use my same foundation make up, but very little with plenty of moisturizer. If you have oily skin, just be sure to go lighter on the foundation as you get older. Don't forget a bit of rosy blush, and heavier make up on upper lids only (not lower) and well groomed brows for "face lift" effect. Learned that from a make up artist. I look older and saggier if my brows aren't done. True!

I use (and have for a while) Neutrogena Intense Wrinkle therapy. The day cream has SPF 15, I think, and the night cream is WONDERFUL. Not much goes on, but at 41 I was already developing MAJOR eye wrinkles, and they are pretty much gone. No joke. I could feel the difference, for I could feel crows feet, about seven lines or so (I'm pretty smiley), and then I felt just smooth skin.

The first few months your face might be a bit sensitive, especially when working out (I took a towel so that I could keep my face from getting too sweaty), but once that's over, just use the creams once a day (or alternate one one day, and the other the next).

Then again, my only real issue at this point is wrinkles. But I have very sensitive skin, and a couple other things I tried just made me break into a rash. I can't wear any foundation--too sensitive--but this stuff doesn't hurt my skin.

Good luck, and congrats on reaching this great decade! Happy Birthday!

Retin-A by Rx, or Retinol products over the counter.

I use Roc eye cream with retinol for the under eye area.

If price is not a concern, I highly recommend Obagi. I had the acne issues too and have not had one problem in maybe 7 years...it REALLY works. However, for moisturizer and sunscreen I use good old Neutrogena...my derm said it works just as well as the Obagi and he's right.

My new favorite moisturizer is Youth Code day lotion by Loreal. Otherwise, I use Olay Regenerist products. Expensive, but totally worth it. I always get compliments on my skin. I'm sure you can search online for coupons or check last Sunday's paper.

I use Enfuselle by Shaklee. You can see the difference in your skin in just a few days. The line has 8 patents. It might seem pricey at first glance, but the products last for about 6 months. They also have a 100 % money back guarantee.
Even with all the things I have been through, everyone thinks I am 10 years younger than I am.

The best cleanser I have ever used is DDF (Doctors' Dermatological Formula) - I know you can buy it through Bliss online, probably other high-end places, but I find it at Marshall's! It takes care of the breakouts, enlarged pores, & oil without drying out your skin.

There's a skin-tightening serum from Strivectin that's nice (also can be picked up at Marshall's - or I imagine any of those stores, though their supply can be hit-or-miss).

Finally I use Olay Complete Defense moisturizer with SPF 30 - it's light & effective.

I like Nivea eye cream with SPF 4.

The other women are right, lots of water, not so much sun exposure! (And I'm going to search for that book right now!)

I'm allergic to benzoyl peroxide, otherwise I think that set of products you always see stars pitching is probably the best. I've seen mall kiosks dedicated to it lately (the name escapes me right now).

I love Mario Badescu products-effective and reasonably priced. If you go on their website and fill out a questionaire regarding your skin they will send you out free samples and offer a regimen. This way you can try the products before you buy!
Also a derm will help you with products and a regimen as well. There are so many options out there check out makeupalley.com before you buy any drugstore items. But if I had to suggest a really good effective drugstore product it would be Neutrogena retinol products I think its "healthy skin" or ROC both are really good!

Try either cell labs or vitashield. Both great products. I used to use vitashield but tried cell labs and loved it. Although it seems pricey, it will last you about 6 months. The cell labs deaging day cream is the same as 3 labs from sax fifth ave. Same manufacturer and same ingredients at a fraction of the cost.
