I am 22 about to be 23 in January, our second child is due in May and at my next drs appointment I plan on asking my dr how soon he can preform a tuba ligation on me. I know a lot of people are telling me to think about it just in case I want more children in the future, I am absolutely 100% positive I want no more kids. My mind is made up. My question is how long was recovery time at home? I know its an in and out thing at the hospital with only a few hours in the recovery room. Just wondering on some experiences so I know what I am in for. Let me add in I am not in the US. I am living in South Korea where they don't question. I am a military wife and my insurance covers it. I don't want an IUD, I don't want to take pills or shots. I want this done and over with. From what I was told at my hospital they will do it all I have to do is talk to my doctor about it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the stories it really helped. I will be asking my doctor in Dec about it. I am well aware of the chances of getting pregnant are with it, but just like any kind of birth control it all has a chance and decreases when you use it a lot. I believe if I use all the steps in preventing another pregnancy, but if I do get pregnant again then I will love that child as well. I would just rather not have another one. lol. But thank you all.

I had a tubal ligation done and everything was fine. I had it done along with a c-section so I don't know if the tingling sensation that I had was from the tubal or the c-section. I know other people who have had it and done and said it was great.

Just to warn you, most doctors won't give a tubal to you. The age issue, is a big one. I'm dealing with that right now, as I'm in my twenties. I have not found one, that will do permanent birth control measures, with us. You might have to look really hard, to find a Dr. willing. I haven't had any luck :(

Hi,

First I wanted to say that I am sorry to hear you are getting a hard time with your decision. I think that is so ridiculous! You know yourself and your body and you already have two kids, you sound like a very responsible woman not just going ahead and bring unwanted children into the world--there are enough of those! I am actually considering having mine done after baby #2 or hubby getting snipped and he is only 26. Anyway--to your question, it will depend in the type of procedure you get done. I would guess they would do it within a couple days of you having the baby and if you have a vaginal delivery, they will probably just go in laparoscopically (sp?) That would be a few days of rest and home and then a check-up in a couple weeks. Not too bad. If you have a C, then maybe they will just go in and do it at the same time. I would talk with the doc and find out exactly what kind of procedure and then you can research and better prepare for the recovery. I wish you the best and congrats on baby #2!

i had no problem getting a tubal done 2 yrs ago after my youngest son was born. i am 27 now so would of been almost 25 at the time. i had no problems with finding a doctor that would do it. recovery time from the pain will depend on the person and if any thing goes wrong. it should though. the pain may last 1-6 days and no lifting any thing heavy, car seat or older child, for about 1-2 weeks. my doctor said she had to wait till after my 6 week check up from giving birth before she could do it though. also you can not go swimming, soak in a tub of water, get in a hot tub or sauna, either for about 3 weeks i think might be longer. any ways good luck. my doctor tried to talk me out of it and i stayed with my answer from the beginning. i do think about having another child but i figure there is always adoption choices to do. any ways once again good luck.

My 2nd daugher was born in Nov & my dr did mine in March. It took about a week or so for me to finally recoup. It was no worse then a bad period, just real bad cramps and feeling very achy. The thing that cracked me up was the whole no lifting more the 10 lbs - okay so who's going to care for my daughter then! You just have to take it easy. I was 35 when I had mine & I know that because of my diabetes I was unable to have any more children. If you are sure about this, then that is what matters. Wishing you the best.

IF you have to have a c-section, they can do it right then. If not, then I think you have to wait until at least the 6 week post-partum time. If you haven't discussed this with your doctor, don't be surprised if he or she won't do one because of your age -even though you have 2 children. SOME will and some won't. My OB-GYN's rule is that you either have to be 30 or have had at least one child, and from what I've heard, others have all sorts of different policies.

Good luck in getting whatever you want! IF you can't find an OB to do it, then consider an IUD. They make one that doesn't utilize any hormones and is very effective. There's always vasectomy as well! It's actually much cheaper, easier to recouperate from and more effective than a tubal.

Why not get a copper iud and in 15 years when it needs to be pulled out get a tubal then. I doubt your doc will do it. That is an option that is near perfect in terms of failure rate and is generally covered by insurance. No hormones or pill to remember everyday. No device to take out and it covers the just in case most ob/gyns are gun shy about. They don't like to because of how many times just in case has happened.

I have a couple of friends that have gotten them and the recovery was a couple days of period cramps and nothing more. My one girlfriend had her tubal before she even left the hospital after having her 2nd baby, she never even noticed a recovery time because she was recovering from the baby so there was nothing different.

I am having my tubal in the hospital after having my 4th baby in January. Seems the easiest way. I must warn you though that the success rate of tubals goes down like .1% if you do it at childbirth.

Good luck and don't let anyone give you a hard time about getting this done so young. You know what you want and have two babies already, just ignore them. I also want to point out that you can have an oblasion along with the tubal and then you will no longer have a period. Sounds wonderful. My insurance will not pay for it so I won't be doing it, but my girlfriend did and loves it!

I had a tubal after my second baby. I had it done at the time of my C-section so I can't really speak to the pain after the procedure. I can tell you that I have no issues post tubal and I do not regret the decision. I am in my 20s and I was not hassled about having the procedure done because of my age (nor should you be...your body, your choice). It took about 20 minutes to have the tubal done. I have a friend who had it done and it took her a few days to recover. My doctor did tell me that the effectiveness decreases after 10 years (not by much...I think she said it goes from 99% to 96%) and that I will have a higher likelihood of becoming pregnant since I was in my 20s when I had the tubal done rather than in my 30s. Just for those finding it difficult to find a doctor willing to perform the surgery...Planned Parenthood might be an option. Good luck!

i had my tubes tied when my son was a little over a year old. A lot of places will request that you wait for at least a year after the birth of your child just be SURE, but not all. I was breastfeeding, so i couldnt be put under anesthesia without having to pump for him, so i just decided to wait. I also only have 2 kids and i had mine tied at 24. I am allergic to pain medication, so all i could take was ibuprofen. When i first woke up i felt like i was in labor. But once i was able to take some ibuprofen it settled down a bit. The first day was pretty rough, it hurt to stand up straight and it ached a lot. but i mostly just slept. I was still groggy from being put under. They next day it just ached like bad cramps and i was virtually fine the 3rd day.

also note though, having your tubed tied is really only about 98% effective and that percentage goes DOWN as the years pass and your body works to repair itself. Studies have actually shown that an IUD (when placed properly and doesnt fall out) has a higher chance at preventing pregnancy than a tubal ligation. But again, that is when it is done perfectly. I personally know 2 people who have gotten pregnant with the mirena.

I had a tubal ligation when I was 31, with one child, and never regretted it for a moment.

I can't speak to the recovery time. I had the ligation along with other surgery. But I never had any complications. I have a couple of friends for whom it was pretty minor surgery, with a very fast recovery. One lady remarked that getting her wisdom teeth pulled had been far worse for her.

I wish you a terrific experience.
