Tubal Ligation - Eastchester,NY

I had my tubes tied after my youngest daughter was born. I didnt have any problems at all. I was still regular each month with no spotting inbetween. But out of my three children my longest labor was 1 1/2 hours and I have since gone through change of life with no symptoms... just stopped... So I may be the odd ball here..

I have not had a tubal ligation but most of my friends have. They have all complained of heavy bleeding, bloating in their stomach etc. I was afraid of having it done as well so my husband had a vasectomy. It really was not a big deal for him at all. He went as an outpatient, stayed in bed for a day and was perfectly fine. If your husband is open to it I would suggest he be the one who goes in for the procedure. I think carrying kids for nine months, taking total havoc on our bodies, especially going through a c-section is a pretty big contribution to creating a beautiful family. A little snip snip on their part is the least they can do. Most men are reluctant thinking it will compromise their sex life, trust me it does not. The risks are so much less for the men and there are no side effects to deal with. Good luck with your new addition.

I had it done after my 3rd was born and was completely fine. No problems whatsoever. But i did wind up going back on the pill because I was having really, really heavy periods. But one doesn't have to do with the other.

Hi A., congratulations!! I had my tubes cut and burned right after my c-section while I was still on the table, I was 34 at the time (this was almost 6 years ago). This way I didn't have to go back and have it done later. I have not experienced any side effects except the heavy bleeding but who knows if one caused the other?? And to me, that is really no big deal I went from having my monthly 2 to 3 days a month to 10 days a month, you just get used to it and life goes on.

Tying your tubes has nothing to do with "heavy bleeding."
I would be more concerned about your age and decision.
Not really reversible. Make sure this is what you want.

Hi A.! I had the tubal ligation done about 5 1/2 years ago after the birth of my second beautiful daughter born via C-section. It was my second C-section as well. I have not had heavy bleeding and my recovery was great. Before I had my daughters my period was terrible. But since getting my tubes tied I have had no cramps and fairly normal bleeding. Good luck with your decision, hope all goes well.

I had the procedure done a couple o years go...I am 40 now my kids are 13,5, twins that are 3 so I was like enough...they cortorized my tubes and there is no undoing which is fine with me...I had a couple of days that I felt awful but I still functioned so to speak cause the twins were still on abottle etc..you will be fine

I had it done during my c-section birth of my twins. My periods are short but day one and two are very very heavy. I also cramp up every other month and noticed my mood swings are much worse then before. As for the mood swings it could be that I'm older,in my thirty's but I really believe it has something to do with having my tubes tied. Good luck!

My OB/Gyn said there is no coorlations between heavy bleeding and the tubal. Four weeks after my third child was born (last summer) I had to get a hernia operation and decide that i should get my tubes tied at the same time. This was a lot for me to do at one time but i wanted to get it over with. I was in pain for about a week...i think it was more because i did both at one time. My girlfriend said she was up and about right away. the first two or three periods after that (when I started to menstruate again (i didn't breastfeed) were very heavy for a few days and then tapered off. Now my periods are normal again. I don't get serious cramping or anything like that. I did notice that when i walked on the treadmill my periods were lighter as well. Although i have not had much time for that lately and my periods are still the same, light to medium.

I don't know what exactly you have been reading, but have you asked the OB/GYN about this. Instead of listening/reading horror stories why not get some facts. Those people may have bled heavy anyway.
I had a tubal after my twins were born at age 40 during the C-section. It is an easy way to get the job done and the recovery may have been a little more difficult than the other 2 c-sections but maybe that is because it was twins, or maybe because I was 40 instead of in my 20's. My point being there are other reasons for things. I did not bleed heavily for the next 15 years, or even 5.
Sounds like you have a wonderful family and ask the OB for info and stop reading horror stories.
Old enough to be your mom, have you talked to yours. I try to encourage the moms to talk to theirs if possible.

Hi A.! I had my tubes cut & tied about 4 months after my 2nd child was born. It honestly wasn't as bad as many women make it seem - but then again think about how's there's always one that has to give you their labor battle story. The hardest thing to me was the lifting part - my youngest daughter was 4 mo old at the time & I think right around 10 lbs, but you shouldn't worry about anything horrible. My cycle was off for a few months following that but my periods weren't really much heavier. After the procedure I remember feeling sore, kind of like just bad cramps and bled heavier for the first few days, but it really wasn't such an awful thing. Good luck!

Hi A....first off congrats on your upcoming baby...second off i had my tubes tied, cut and burned and i've had no problems since then. I had mine done matter of fact 1 month after i delivered my now 10 year old daughter. I have no problems whats so ever so I would say if your ready to have this procedure done and your definately sure you don't want anymore children then by all means have it done. Also, all woman are different so you can't go by what they all say, speak with your doctor if you have questions and go with what you want. again congrats on your newborn and enjoy.......

Hi I had one like 19 yrs ago, and I didnt have any complication, you need to let them know that at the time of delivery they could do the procedure at the same time to save you time, I had mine vaginal and they just made a small incision in my belly bottom no scarring , it was great, the only thing is that I get very sick with the anesthia thats all other then that its great, good luck!

Hi A., I had my tubes tied 25+ years ago after baby #5. I did not have heavy bleeding. I did develop a cyst on one ovary that has receded with menopause. I think it may have been a build up of eggs although doctor would not say. My husband and I have enjoyed the freedom and lack of worry over an unwanted pregnancy. Grandma Mary

I had my tubes tied after my second son was born (also a C-section...it's "easy" while they are there...). Yes, I have a day (6 hours?) that is heavier than when I was on the Pill, but the remaining time is about the same. I have no additional cramping, side effects, etc., but then again, I didn't have any of that BEFORE, either (thinking back to the days before I was using the Pill...). For me, it's the best decision I ever made (of course, I was 39 when my second son was born, and we had said long ago 2 kids or 2 pregnancies, whichever came first).

I'm rather surprised at the few negative comments. I'd tend to think that it may have been a botched surgery. Nothing like this was ever told to me. They just wanted to make sure that I wasn't too young to have the procedure since sometimes people change their minds. At your age with 4 children, you're likely quite sure of yourself.

There was a very small incision made in my belly button. I went home a few hours later. The scab fell off after a few days. A woman's periods can and often do change (for better or worse) after childbirth. I wouldn't think this is from the sterilization procedure though. Until today I never heard of this.

I had my tubes tied 5+ years ago and no problems. I have known many women who have had the procedure without problems. Complications may depend on the doctor or other existing health issues. I would not fear the procedure but make sure your doctor has much experience performing it.

not me.. but my mom had this done when she too had a c-section. It was wonderful. She talked it over with her doctor.. told him her fears... and he reasurred her.. and it went great. He told her it's a lot easier with a c-section. good luck... and good luck with your new little baby!! God has blessed you....

I am 40 yrs old and had the procedure done a year ago.
I have had no such problems with heavy bleeding, in fact my periods are lighter and more regular than they ever were before. If you are sure you are done with babies, I would suggest you go ahead and do it. Hope you experience the same results as me. Good Luck!!

I had a tubal ligation after a section also. I was sure I didn't want anymore either. For 10 years I struggled with miscarriages, infertility, and complicated pregnancies and now have two beautiful children 5 years and 18 months but recently I have had second thoughts about wanting 1 more.

Now to answer your question - I now experience horrible pain when I would normally be ovulating, every time it happens I think about doing a reversal. I have heard that this is normal monthly pain but since most people have been on birth control they don't know what a normal cycle feels like, I have never been on birth control pills so clearly that's not it. I have read the pain can be so severe that some women actually go on birth control pills - this kind of defeats the purpose. My bleeding however seems to be the same. I hope this helps. My friend had a tubal ligation just minutes after her 6th child was delivered by c-section. She has had no complaints and has only had to heal once from surgery. A.

I'm not so sure that heavy bleeding is strickly associated with tubal ligations. I have had my tubes tied since I turned 40 and didn't experience the heavy bleeding until I reached my middle 40's and the middle of premenopause. My friend has not had the surgery and is now experiencing the heavy bleeding too. Both of us started the heavy bleeding in our mid 40's, we both started premenopause in our late 30's. I also have had the Ablasion surgery to eliminate the heavy bleeding and have had no problems with that surgery.

I heard alot of horror stories as well. I knew I didn't want to ever be pregnant again. So what I did was looked to my own family, and asked who had it done that i was directed related to. My mother never had any negative side effects. I decided to go ahead with it, because, if my husband had it done, that would only protect me from pregnancy as long as I'm with him, what if we broke up, or God forbid I was assaulted, (I know, horrible thought, but this all went into my decision making). It's been over a year now and my periods have come back (I never menstruate right away because I breastfeed my kids and that delays menstruation with me) and they have been exactly the same as they were before: I have the heavier bleeding the first two days with cramps then the rest of the time I can actually forget I even have it, it gets so light. Fortunately it worked out for me. So my tubal changed nothing for me, except gave me peace of mind that I won't have an "oops". lol

Hi, I had my tubal ligation performed directly after my c-section. My recovery was delayed b/c I was so busy taking care of a toddler and infant. Otherwise, I had no side effects. I breast feed my children. I don't know how much that played into having lighter periods after wards.

You are young for this decision, but if you are having a repeat c-section, you should tie your tubes. Each c-section gives risk of further complications with the next pregnancy, and 4 is just about the limit.
I had a tubal 6 years ago, and I've had no problems at all.

Congrats on your baby to be! I just had my third and final baby almost two years ago and did decide to have my tubes tied during my c-section. I had a c-section with all of my children and never had a problem. I just wanted to let you know the tubal ligation made a big difference with the c-section. I had a lot of pain the first week or two that I didn't have in my other c-sections. Once I got over that hurdle, my body bounced back and I don't regret doing it. I do experience slight bleeding when I ovulate now but nothing too crazy and my period is no different than before. Everyone told me that the surgery was no big deal and I just wished people would have been a little more honest so I could have been prepared. I'm also older than you(39 when I delivered) so I'm sure that can impact how your body reacts to the surgery as well. You have to go with your gut and do whats best for you. I'm sure it will work out fine!

I had a tubal done during my c-section and all went well. Its been 3 years and I had problems with periods, but my doctor prescribed a birth control and it has straightened them around, but thats just minor. I did want to tell you though When my son turned 2 I left my husband. I thought I was all done having babies, now I wish that it was my husband that had had the procedure. I wish that I could get pregnant again, not that I want a baby, but I feel broken. Every one has their own situation, and I just wanted to give my two cents. Good Luck.

I know you said you have had alot of negative responses, but I have to agree with everyone else. If I could afford to have it reversed, I WOULD! Yes the painful periods are THAT BAD! Plus it was only a year later that the clip that was on my right tube came off and is now floating around in there somewhere, not cool. All that pain just to have that happen. I've actually had to call in sick to work in the past because my period was so heavy, lots of clotting and pain. I've had to miss out on events with my son, family and friends as well. Sooooo... not worth it! If I could do it all over again, I'd NEVER would have had it done! The procedure itself left me uncappable of taking care of my son for 3 days! I just couldn't do it. I had a bruise the size of a basketball on my stomache, and not to be gross but god awful gas pains from the gas that they use during the procedure. I would have rather have given birth again than to have gone through that. And it took me 3 days and being induced to have my son, that says alot.
My advice, find some other form of birth control if you can(me, I can't take the pill). There's nothing worth missing out on your kids, especially not monthly pain like that.

P.S. I'm 33, will be 34 this year, and prior to my tubeligation had normal periods virtually pain free. My OBGYN said the pain is from monthly swelling that occurs during menstration and that causes a tightning effect on my tubes from the clips,that may be the reason for the discomfort. I am a bloater, unfortunetly. Hope all this helps you.
