Trying to Get My Toddler to Sleep

My daughter is 17 months old and we do the same bed time routine we have done for months now, and the past week she has been fighting sleep, screaming until 10 or 11 pm. Is this normal? Or should I consider asking a doctor?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thank you for all of the responses. She only takes one late afternoon nap these days, and her daddy has been gone to Afghanistan for two weeks today, and I think she MAY be having a tooth come in. I didnt even think of that! Thank you ladies so very much :) I guess I just needed some reminding. I'm a SAHM & since my husband is gone (when we can usually evaluate any situation together) its harder, and i guess I worry about her more now since she is the main focus of my everyday.

What has changed?
Her nap, she is only getting 1 nap?

How much out door playtime?

When do you all get home form work daycare, Or are you a SAHM? What timed does dad get home? Any of that change?

New baby?

Think about any changes.
If none,

Is she feeling ok?
Have you noticed more teeth coming or her molars?
Are her diapers a little runny?

Is she eating well?

Could be her nap needs to be moved to earlier in the day.. never past 2:30 pm and only for an hour and a half.

Make sure she gets to run and play and jump for an hour to an hour and a half in the morning AND again in the afternoon. Running errands does not count.

Make sure the evenings are not "tickle parties and chasing and teasing" around the house. They ened to be slower and calmer and quieter.
No TV./videos.

It takes a child double the time to calm down as it did to tile them up.
Hope this helps.

Hi D., She may be going through changes. How many naps does she take. If it is 2, maybe it is time to decrease to one late morning or midday so that she will go to sleep earlier. Also, have there been any changes in her life? new daycare or babysitter or routines????

Add on: Hi D.. After reading your addiiton, I had to write. Wow. Your husband in Afghanistan and you a SAHM. It must be hard for both of you. Your daughter is lucky to have you as such a caring, attentive and loving momma.

It's very typical for toddlers to do this between 15 and 17 months, and it sucks! Just keep up with whatever routine you have and stick to it like glue and she'll get back to normal in a week or so

my son is older but i let him fall asleep on the couch some nights and then carry him off to bed..maybe she's scared or wants to cuddle with you..do u read to her and snuggle to help her sleep sometimes? i don't think you need to see a doctor.

After we got into a consistent sleeping through the night pattern any waking up in the middle of the night or problems usually meant ear infections for us. They can be happy and show no signs of pain during the day but lying down at night is when they feel it and it hurts. Might be worth a quick ear check visit to the doctor.
We've missed many an ear infection for a week or more because there are no symptoms other than sleep problems.
Good luck!
