Love it!!!! We have been twice. Porta Plata and Punta Cana. If I could take the place we stayed in Porta Plata and put it in Punta Cana I would move there!!! =)

We felt very safe and secure at our hotel. We really didn't venture out too much but did some. See if there is any type of Rum factory or cigar factory. We did a tour in Porta Plata. We also toured the city of Porta Plata. Talk with your hotel and see what they have available.

Where are you staying? We stayed a little bit out of Punta Cana at a Beach's resort. I don't think I would go there again. We wanted to be a little closer to town.

Have fun!!!! The people are so nice and friendly!

It is beautiful there! Everley is right about the airport...it is chaos, big lines and several things to do. And especially about finding your transportation out---way too many time shares looking to grab you, or taxi services. We were with Apple so always easy to find those shirts.
The other thing I didn't know about and was disappointed...at the resort...the beaches are not private and there are vendors hounding you to buy parasailing, booze cruises, etc. Our resort seemed to only let one or two on at a time, but still very annoying. We learned quickly to ignore them.

I've been to Punta Cana a few times. Bring everything you need because the hotel gift shops are quite expensive (ie - sunscreen, pool floaties, lipstick, advil). If you're flying into Punta Cana, plan for a LONG time in the airport. You will exit your aircraft and be herded as a group towards customs. You have to fill out a few forms, hand them over, then wait in a line to have your passports stamped. We didn't know about this when we first went and it was really stressful thinking that we were losing time at the beach. So plan for it. If you have kids with you, bring something for them to play with while you all stand in line. There aren't any areas to sit down or entertain kids. Make sure you have your transportation to the hotel arranged and that you know exactly which company you're looking for and what their representatives wear. It's pretty chaotic after customs with all of the various transport companies so it helps if you know you're looking for a Sunport guy in tan slacks and a green shirt versus a Suntaxi guy in blue slacks and a white shirt.

have fun!
