Tramatic or Dramatic Nail Clipping

I have a 15 month old daughter who will not let me clip her fingernails. She screams like i am trying to cut off her actual finger. I had the same issues with my older daughter at about this age. I didn't find a solution then, and i am still looking for one now. Anyone have any tips on how to get the job done without all the drama, and to make it less tramatizing for her?

What can I do next?

Do it when they are asleep!! ha ha. NO really I have heard that that is the only way some people get it done.

A., have you tried giving her the clippers and letting her clip yours (or attempt to anyway)? Once she sees your reaction she will mimic you, so let her try and laugh and giggle with her. You might be surprised next time you try to do hers alone.

Hi, I used to cut my daughters nails while she was asleep and now she is almost three since she was old enough to understand me ive been telling her that when there is dirt in her nails , that the dirt is "bugs" well since she is afraid of bugs she wants mommy to get the "bugs" out and cut her nails so the bugs cant get in anymore ... Weve been doing this method since about almost two ... so I would definately start at the age she is with the sleep method but as she gets older give the "bug " thing a try ... it really works

With my first one I had to wait until she was asleep, like most people said. Now I have a 4 year old and a 20 month old and for the last few months, I have cut them both at the same time. When my son sees his older sister having her nails done, he puts his hand right out for his turn.

i used to keep the clippers in my purse and cut my daughter's nails when she fell asleep in the car. my younger daughter (who's 15m now) isn't too bad about it so that's about the only suggestion i can come up with :)

hi A., i also have a 15 month old daughter and to tell you the truth i have never used a nail clipper on her finger nails i only use them for her toe nails. ever since day one i was afraid to use the clippers on her lol this may sound gross to some but i have always bitten her nails off. i felt much safer doing that than anything.my daughter started to not let me do that so i just wait till right before nap time when she is dazed and tired and she usually lets me do it with no problem then. also right after bath time her nails are easy so its alot quicker to take off.hope i helped some : )

if you can't get her to sit still for you to click her nails you can either trying to do it when she is asleep or try using a fingernail file while she is sitting on your lap and show her that you do yours too.

I've always clipped my son's nails while he's sleeping. One night every other week or so, I let him cuddle in my lap and fall sleep instead of putting him in his crib (now bed). While he's alseep on my lap, cut clip his fingernails and his toenails, and then drop him in bed. I don't even know how he'd react if I tried to do it with him awake.

I have a 2 1/2 yr old that thinks the world is ending when his nails are cut. He screams and screams. I just do it and and it only takes a couple of minutes. I praise him when we are done and give him a big hug. It is getting better. I used to bribe my oldest one when he was little with M&Ms. He has his nails cut now with no issue. He is 5. But my little guy cannot be bribed. I also trid it when he was asleep, but he woke up. So that put an end to that strategie!! :) Good luck and buy some ear plugs!!

Don't bite the nails off because you risk ripping off more than you intend and causing bleeding. Also, with her fingers in your mouth, if you do open a wound, it'll be more likely to get infected. Wait until after bath time when her nails are soft and try to make it part of the routine, or just wait until she's sleeping. You might also get your 4 yr old to let you trim her nails in front of the 15 month old. If she sees her older sibling sitting still and getting praised for letting mommy trim nails, then she might decide she wants to have her nails done too. Worked for us.

Hi there. I have a 4 year old and 1 year old. For the first 2 years of my daughter's life I clipped her nails when she was asleep and I'm doing the same thing with my son. It's the only sane solution I came up with. That's my two cents!

Definitely try it while she's sleeping. It's so much easier. You can also try using a soft grit file too.

either make it into a game so she will let you or wait until she is asleep.

I bribed my kids with mini m&m's or gummy snacks.. if they fought me, the bowl was taken away.. worked like a charm. You could always use the paint the nails after idea too.. maybe she'll sit if sheknows she'll get pretty nails after.. goodluck

i actually used to bite my kids nails off (sounds gross but they actually like it) when they were babies because i was always afraid to cut them with the clippers. It's worth a try.
