Tonight I just want to ask all you mom's and dad's to hug your kids tight and don't forget to say "I love you" to them when the leave you. There has been a lot of young life's lost in the last two days in my home town. 3 16 yr Olds, an 11 yr old and a 20 yr old. All involved in different car accidents. So just remember that any life can end in an instant and you may never get to say I love you again or give them a hug. A thing I live by, especially lately, never go to bed angry, and always say I love you.

For required question. Why do you think there is so much tragedy anymore.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Eta: I personally did not know them. They were all within a few hours of another (the car accidents) in a 30 mile radius.

The thing I hate about car accidents is that so much can be avoided if drivers would just pay attention. Such a simple concept yet when not followed, lives are lost.

It may be a sign of the times (texting, digital gadgets, more cars on the road).

Those precious kids. So sad for their families and friends.

It is a good reminder from bad situations.

Psalms 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Telling the people in your life that you love them is a wonderful way to live your life. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm so sorry for all you're going through. It can be very difficult to see the good and the hope when you see such sadness up close.

For what it's worth, I don't think there actually is any more tragedy now than there was at any time in the past. I think we live in a world with the internet and 24 hour news channels with not much to talk about. We hear about tragedies in ways that we never would have 20 or 30 years ago.

Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. There was a time when we would have been very much unaware of any bad news if it was happening more than 30 miles away,

But I will take your advice and give my kids an extra hug tonight. It is good to stop and be thankful for all the ways we are blessed.

There was an accident in Texas yesterday... (or early this morning? Don't remember..>) FedEx truck ran a red light (at a highway intersection), broadsided and flipped an SUV..... the man and 2 of his 3 kids in the SUV were killed...... horrible in itself.... but the people in the SUV weren't wearing seatbelts.

I wonder if they might have survived if they HAD been wearing seatbelts?

I feel like every time I turn on the news or log onto fb another young life is gone. Its so upsetting. I find myself wondering why? I will pray for those families. I wish to god it stops happening so much.

(sigh) even if you're not directly impacted, it does have an overall effect... doesn't it?

I discussed this at length with friends/family. I remember in grade school losing a classmate....& the subject is still debated: was it suicide or accidental death? It involved a leather belt & bunk beds. We'll never know.

In high school (late 70s-1980), I lost 2 friends/classmates. One had been experimenting with drugs & she had an undiagnosed heart condition, & she was found dead in her bed. The other was killed in an ambush due to drug dealing. She was in her older boyfriend's home, & they were all gunned down by a rival dealers. & I say these two girls were friends.... simply because we socialized at school. Once that final bell rang, they were off the grid....& we all worried about them.

With my sons, my older son (age 26) has lost quite a few friends/classmates. Car accidents have been the #1 cause. Drinking/drugs were involved in some of the cases, but not all. Speed & road conditions also factored in. I believe he's lost close to 10 friends... which is a lot living in a small town of <4000 people!

With my younger son (age 17), he's lost a few friends too. Probably about 5. All were car accidents....well, one was a bus accident which made national news. .....you know, I may be wrong on my count....I think we're at 7 for him. That's a hell of a high # for being only 17. :(

Sooo, what's the difference between my school years & my sons'? Not faster cars. My 1st car was a Camaro with a V8. My 2nd car was a Corvette! Today's car are fast too, but safer to drive. Road conditions are better. Drugs & booze were available then....& still are today. Many of us were dumbasses....& there's still a lot on the road today.

Sooo, what's the difference? Cell phones & texting. Increases in population, certainly. More people on the road, more accidents....if we ran the #s (population vs accidents....then & now), I wonder if the % has changed. I don't know.....good question!

In answer to your question...

I think that fewer parents drive their kids nowadays. They instead give in to the whines to drive. All of those listed except the 20 year old, should have been driven by their more experience driving parents.

That's my answer to why so many automobile tragedies nowadays.

I know they say accidents & abductions have been around forever and we
are just more apt to hear about it because of social media.
However, in regards to accidents, I think some of it could be blamed on
new technology (texting on phones, digital mapping devices installed in
cars etc.).
I think we all just need to pay attention when driving, be careful in regards to pedestrians. Teach our kids to be cautious, to do their best
to stay with us when out in public, what to do in any kind of emergency (getting separated from us.....like the poster's sugg of approaching a mom w/kids), fire in the home, being at a park etc.
