Torn Winter Jacket

I bought my daughter a winter jacket at the beginning of last winter and it still fits her this winter. But I noticed the other day a small tear on the arm. I'm trying to figure out how I can fix it. It's polyester and I don't think an iron patch will work. Any ideas of what I can use to fix it? Thanks!

What can I do next?

They sell really fun duct tape at craft stores... I've duct taped a winter jacket before, works really well, but looks like... pretty duct tape ;) If you're going for functionality vs. high style, I say go for it!

@Patty, no problem! They have houndstooth, skulls, and camo for boys, and flowers, rainbows, pink and glitter for girls... super easy and lasts!! I've also used it on leaky snow boots before :)

My first thought is Liquid Stitch, which you can find at craft/sewing stores like Joanne's. I use it frequently for stuff like this - although you'll probably be re-gluing it every few weeks.

But, I also really like Rachel's idea with the fun duct tape!

sew a patch on. You can even buy something cute to sew on. The type of patches they sell at touristy places, etc....

Oh...... I like Rachel D.'s suggestion better than mine! Sounds easy and you can tape it on cute enough. Tape over it, then tape over the tape in the shape of a star or something in your daughters favorite color. Thanks for the tip Rachel!

You are completely right about not wanting to use an iron. It would be a high risk of melting the polyester. Depending on where the tear is, you could sew a colorful patch large enough to cover the tear. Go to the crafts section at your Walmart, KMart, Target, or a local fabric or crafting store and let her pick out, one that she likes. If she likes several different designs on the patches, let her get a few different ones and arrange them however she likes them on that (or both) arms of the jacket. Before you cover the hole with the patch, you should use nail polish to seal the edges of the tear to prevent fraying when you wash the jacket. This gives her a chance to express herself, and you a chance to do a project with her. If she opts to do patches on both arms, you could sew them on one arm while she is sewing on the other. By the way, some patches come with sticky stuff on the back to hold them in place while you are sewing them. If the one(s) she picks out don't have it, you can put a small amount of Elmer's glue on the entire back, to the edges of the patch, and let it dry for an hour before sewing. Any glue that might show from under the patch will wash out. Have fun, and let her creative flag fly.
