"Toddler Yeast Infection"

Hi my daughter is three years old. She recently got a yeast infection from strong antibiotics she was taking. I have some cream to treat it prescribed by the doctor. Is this normal for little girls so young to get a yeast infection? This is her second one and it breaks my heart to see her uncomfortable. Could too much juice add to this issue? I am prone to yeast infections...have I cursed my baby? *****Thank you to everyone that has taken time out of their day to respond*****Mommy's are the best!

What can I do next?

This happened to my daughter too while she was taking antibiotics, and I have never had a yeast infection myself. I was told that the antibiotics kill the good bacteria that keep the yeasts under control, so it should resolve itself quickly after she stops taking the antibiotics. In the meantime the antifungal creams do a pretty good job.

OMG! This is so EASY to solve!!! My 2-year-old son got a staph infection in his diaper area. He had to go on majorly strong sulfa antibiotics for 10 days. Yes, little boys do get yeast infections, too. I put him on double the dose of a children's chewable probiotic (upon the advice of his pediatrician) called Primadophilus Kids. He loves them. I gave him one in the morning and one at night. I decided to keep him on them but just the normal once-a-day dosage. Well, after a couple of weeks I quit. Soon thereafter he got another diaper rash! Instead of more antibiotics, I decided to just put him back on the probiotics, and IT WORKED!! The rash cleared up!! So, he has been on them ever since. It has been months, and he has never had one single diaper rash or infection. Try it! You can get them at Mother's Market, Henry's Market or any Whole Foods Store. It has to be kept refrigerated, b/c the cultures are live. Here's a link to the product I use:

BTW, I also started taking adult-strength probiotics everyday, and I have never felt healthier, even when a cold went through my whole household. I never got it!
Best wishes!

It is normal, unfortunatly. My best friend's daughter, when she was only about one or two months old, she got a yeast infection. Just keep using the cream and it should go away soon.

Good luck!

Like many of the other responses, I have heard that eating yogurt with live L. acidophilus (good bacteria) helps prevent yeast infections.

Hi there..my sister had this problem too and a OBGYN suggested to rub some Tea Tree Oil, (natural food stores) in the surrounding area of the vigina, but not inside. Also, wash w/hot water and bleach all her undies. This helped her and hasn't had a breakout since.

Hope it works for you.

My daughter was on antibiotics for 5 months straight (ear infections). I made sure to give her yogurt twice a day (the activa kind with live cultures). Miraculously she never got a yeast infection. You may want to try loading her up with yogurt now and then make it part of her daily diet from now on.

It is common for children, and even adults, to get yeast infections while taking antibiotics. Talk to your doctor about this and he may change antibiotics or have you make sure she eats yogurt with special cultures while taking them.

Keep an eye on the inside of her mouth as well. If you see cottage cheese, or a "milk-like" substance, she could have the yeast in her mouth (thrush.) She will need different antibiotics for that. A good resourse is BabyCenter.com, if you type in yeast infection, you'll get some good ideas.

Go to a health food store or holistic doctor; they'll know. Acidophilus helps; beyond that, I'm unsure. But yes, some people are prone to yeast infections because of too much candida in the system.

Hi my daughter got one pretty early on and my doctor recommended I use like "lotrimin" what they use for jock itch and combine it with some hydrocortisone cream. It worked for my daughter.

Dear L.,

I would think that it is a combination of your DNA and the antibiotics. Many years ago the doctor took away my son's antibiotics for another reason, and I had to just take good care of him until his body cured itself. So you might think of talking to the doctor about an alternative.

I know that it is really tough to see our babies go through something like that.

Good thing that she has such an easy going personality.

Good Luck, C. N.
