Toddler Waking with Pain in Wrist and Complains of Pains in Fingers

My 3 yo son often has phantom pains. He'll scream at night and say his wrist hurts. Sometimes during the day his finger will hurt. sometimes his leg hurts. He'll cry it hurts so bad, and then it goes away. Has anyone else experienced this? I am starting to get worried as it seems very odd.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the responses! I love this site. I ended up calling his pediatrician and she ordered blood work to rule out Leukemia and Juvenile Arthritis. The CBC / his white count looked great and the first two arthritis tests were fine. We're still waiting on results for a few other of the arthritis tests like ANA, etc. My son plays a lot of legos/lego guys and plays Xbox so she thinks it may just be an overuse injury and/or growing pains but we will keep an eye on him.

It sounds like you are already taking care of things...but I thought I would add my two cents.

My son has those types of pains in his legs and knees at night sometimes...growing pains. We give him Tylenol and rub his legs for a little bit. It used to happen a couple of times a week....now it seems to be happening only a couple of times a month.

My sister had the same issue as a child....so did my husband. Nothing serious, I believe.

It is good you are seeing the doctor, but I wouldn't worry too much! Merry Christmas!

Hi! When I read your request the first thing that came to mind is that mabey his wrist or leg is asleep. Also, he could be experiencing numbness or tingling in his finger.
Have you tried going to a chiropractor? I don't go all that often but when my arms, legs keep "falling asleep" or my fingers or toes feel numb without cause, I get adjusted and the problem goes away!

glad you're checking with a doctor...my kids both have growing pains in their legs, knees. Potassium (like bananas) and staying hydrated helps, as does heat when they cramp up! Good luck.

I'm sorry I have no clue about what is happening, but I would definitely call the pediatrician's office & ask about it. Explain everything to them and they can tell you if you should bring him in to be checked out or not.

I hope you figure it out!

I would speak with your pediatrician immediately to make sure it's not something serious.

It could be growing pains - truly pains in the epiphysial (growth) plates, or it could be something else that needs to be addressed (like arthritis or tendonitis).

With Christmas coming, my recommendation would be to call immediately to make sure you can get in as quickly as possible to help make it a pleasant Christmas for your family and your son.

My 3 year old does this too and we have established with the doctor that it is growing pains. In fact, his ankles hurt so bad sometimes he cannot walk for a couple of days. Turns out he is extraordinarily tall and one of the biggest side-effects of growing so quickly is serious joint pain and even breakage in the small ankle bones. Yikes! I am able to control the bouts of pain with Tylenol or Motrin when needed and my husband vividly remembers this same problem when he was a boyaaaaaa.

Needless to say it sounds pretty normal to me but I would certainly take him to the doc and double check it.

Good luck!
