I was wondering if anyone can offer some advice to relieve the pain of TMJ? I've read up on some things on the internet, but nothing seems to be helping. Today is the worse day I've had yet - can hardly open my mouth and cannot bite down with any type of force

What can I do next?

L. there are many things that can help TMJ problems. As I'm sure you know you should avoid gum, taffy caramels and foods that require extensive chewing and extremely hard foods. I'm sure you've tried the tylenol/motrin route, you can also try applying warm moist heat compresses. As I'm sure you know these things just help you really need to find out what is causing you to grind your teeth (other than stress) hopefully your dentist can make you a mouth gaurd that can help prevent further damage to your teeth / tmj. I've can relate I've suffered tmj problems off and on for 14 years and I also worked as a dental assistant for 9 years prior to staying home to have my girls. So please feel free to ask any questions if oyu'd like.

Dear L.,

I had TMJ for quite some time, and the best relief I found was with massage, in addition to a bite guard that I wore daily at first, then just at night. Your dentist may be able to fashion a custom mouth-guard, but check insurance coverage first.

I hope this helps! good luck!

Dear L., acupuncture can help a great deal. Find an experienced acupuncturist in your area and give him/her a call.

First, I highly recommend a bite guard and I have no idea whether or not there is a real difference between the inexpensive ones at Walgreens or Target that you use hot water to mold yourself ($20) or the ones that the dentist molds for you that cost many hundreds!
Second, I recommend my chiropractor (Aaron Apelbaum, Boca) who will put on a plastic glove and put his fingers up inside your mouth and do thing to your jaw, etc.

The good news is that when you feel better you'll think you have a whole new life!

Good luck!
