My dad just forwarded me some advice on removing ticks...LUCKILY, we've not had this problem YET and God Lord willing - won't -

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20); the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.

So mama's - do you THINK this will work? A LONG time ago when my daughter had a tick, we used baby oil to "suffocate" the tick...so tell me what you think!

So What Happened?

Rachel - what is a tick spoon?

My husband is a smoker - but like I said - LUCKILY - we've not had this problem...however, my hubby and son are at Boy Scout camp so who knows what they are going to come home with!! YIKES!!!

We used to use lighter fluid, the kind you put in zippo lighters... it made the tic back out instantly.

yes,I have heard the soap thing works well. I would recommend dawn dish soap and not hand soap. It is thicker and works well.

u have to suffocate them. A glob of Vaseline works miracles. they instantly pull out of your skin, because they cant breath.

we just removed one from my daughter last week. It was a dog tick (the big ones) and my husband was giving her a shower and found it on her hip. It hadn't fully burrowed it's self in yet, but it did bite her. My husband got it out and said it was pretty easy since it wasn't in her all the way yet. I took pictures of it just incase there ended up being a problem and we needed to go to the dr. Thankfully nothing happened

I got an email about this trick, supposedly it works. I haven't had to try yet though. My dad used the tweezer method on me when I was 10 but you have to pull the whole thing out. Be careful- I almost died when I was 3 from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever...my parents never saw the tick, it was under my hair line on the neck.

Being a smoker - I know, GASP... On an adult, holding a lit cig close to the tick's behind will make it back out pretty darned fast.

But to suffocate one, I've heard vasoline or some sort of fuel (like G-ma T stated-lighter fluid) or kerosene.

This is actually not a good idea-- suffocating the tick can cause it to regurgitate and transmit disease faster.

Your best bet is to use a tweezer or a special tick remover and pull it steadily out-- don't jerk it.
