Things to Do in Western PA

So we are a military family, currently stationed in Pittsburgh for another year. My sister lives in Johnstown (a 2 hour drive). Once we get restationed we won't be near family. I told my husband that we should have my sister babysit our 4 year old and 2 year old and him and i and our 3 month old exclusively breastfed baby should go have a weekend away somewhere. I know it's not much of a weekend away with a baby, but without a 4 yr old and a 2 year old, it'll be soooo quiet. So anyway, we have no idea what we could do, other than like a bed and breakfast and my husband isn't one that would really want to do that. Does anybody know of something fun we could do? I really wouldnn't want to go much farther than like 2 hours away but if it was worth it i may. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I second Nemacolin. Its a little pricey though so if that is not in your budget check out Seven Springs. Its really close and there is a TON to do there. You could also look at Deep Creek Maryland. The Wisp resort is where we stay for short trips.

Another nice one is the Omni Bedford Springs resort. It has golf, a pool, a really great spa and just really nice grounds in general. It is right off the turnpike, and you would go past Johnstown to get there, so you could easily drop off the older kids.

Nemacolin is a little nicer than Bedford Springs, but I think Bedford is less expensive, on the way to where your kids need to go, and is very very nice.

Do you want active or relaxation? Seven Springs is is more active, as are Deep Creek and Wisp, whereas Nemacolin and Bedford Springs are more about ultimate relaxation. If it were me, and I'm going somewhere without my kids, I want relaxation, which is why I'd recommend Nemacolin or Bedford Springs over the others.

There are a lot of things to do here in Erie, especially in the summer. Ethnic Festivals, Presque Isle, tons of Museums, everythinghavingtodowithLakeErie, the Philharmonic, Erie Playhouse plays, downtown music... Our Jazz Festival is August 3/4, and Celebrate Erie is Aug 16-19

Checkout GoErie.com, the website for our local rag, and ErieReader.com for lists of local events. Also check out http://www.presqueisle.org/ and the Port Authority site porterie.org

I can also suggest a good B&B or where the nice hotels are, just ask.

Nemacolin Woodlands. It is absolutely worth it. They do have childcare programs during the day and evening. We took my son when he was 3 and he LOVED it - they went to the Gymnasium and the on grounds petting zoo. And we went to the spa and had a LONG and wonderful dinner. If you golf it is supposed to be amazing. Also of course skiing at the right season.

There are a ton of things to do in Erie (with the kids too!) and is not even 2 hours away. Nice family amusement park, great beaches and trails, www.visiteriepa.com is also a great reference site. Cooks forest is also great but I'm not sure the distance from pittsburgh.

One of our all-time favorite trips was the Laurelville area: we checked out a winery (Stone Villa) that had their annual festival that weekend, went to Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Waters and Kentuck Knob houses, we stayed at http://www.foggymountainlodge.com/ which had great rooms/food/service and was tucked away from everything.

Good luck!

Seven Springs has year-round activities. Are you taking your older kids to your sister's or is she coming to your house? A friend just recently went to Cleveland and had a really nice time there.
