The Scoop on Poop

Hello Moms. I am a first-time Mom and am experiencing a change in my son's bowel movements for the first time. He turned four months last week and on Saturday, he began having a bowel movement immediately after each feeding. He is a formula-fed baby and I began adding cereal to his formula at night only approximately two weeks ago. His stool is basically the same consistency as it has always been, maybe just a little more watery. He feels fine, has no temperature, and is happy and alert. Prior to this, he would usually have one bowel movement per day. I plan to call his pediatrician but before I do, I would like to know if you experienced Moms think this is normal or if I should be concerned. Thanks!

What can I do next?

HI, my name is J. and I live in Chesapeake,Va! I personally wouldn't worry too much about the Poop ubless it has blood or unless all the poopy diapers are runny/etc. Babies are just funny wiht thier poop from what I have seen. I am a stay at home mom of a 2 1/2 year old and a 12 month old. i wouldn't worry but if you feel like you should call your pediatrician I would do it. I call and go to my pediatrician so much I practically live there! If it gives you peace of mind call them becsaue it is so worth it, but I personally don't think you need to worry. The main thing here. You changed his diet. You will notice the older he gets he will sit in the high chair or where ever you are feeding him and go. Can't stop it. Don't worry unless as was said, he has runny or even green poop.

I would try to call the doctor. When I was a first time mommy I called the doctor non-stop. Some children can be different my daughter (4 yrs) now was fine. She had her schedules too like your son. My son (13 mo) now he was about 4-5 mo. he was having a similar problem but he is bowel movements were is formula. He had a protein intake that we had to change formula. If it isn't the formula then everything should be fine. He digestive system is getting to normula though.

About me: Stay at home mom w/two children. My daughter is 4 and going to daycare part time. My son 13 mo. stays at home now. Trying to find a part time job or so to get some adult time for me. My husband is in the Navy at Oceana.

Hi J.,

I have 14 month old twin boys and we experienced a few bowel changes as the boys' digestive systems continually matured. The change in his diet, even though only at nighttime, is having an effect on the way his body processes his food.
I would be concerned if he had a fever or if the consistency resembled diarrhea. As always, call your doctor if you are concerned, it is better to be overly cautious but I have a feeling they will tell you not to worry about this one!
