My pediatrician told me that a baby can poop 7 times in one day in or once in seven days and be completely fine!

My 5 week old daughter has gone back and forth recently with breastmilk and formula. In the last 3 days, she has had no bowel movement and has had bad gas. She has been crying a lot. Is this an allergy to the formula or her body adjusting to the formula? HELP!
MOMS!Thanks for all your advice. She did have a bowel movement right after I posted my request, and what a BIG mess!! She is relieved but I think this is compiled with some kind of virus since she started vomitting too--formula and breastmilk. I see our ped. dr. tomorrow and will let the dr. know her situation. I am so appreciative to all the MOMS and their input. You put a worried mom at ease!

Hi V. -
It may be her body adjusting to the formula - or she may need a soy based formula or a prescription one like Similac/alimentum. I would try giving her some mylicon. Some people try a little prune juice mixed with water to help her have a bowel movement. I would monitor her the next two days and if she still hasn't gone call up your MD to see what they recommend - It may be a change in the formula.
Why not just stop feeding her formula altogether until the problem resolves? Babies digest breastmilk better than formula, so a few days of plain breastmilk will get her regular again. (This might also be her message to you that she'd like to be a breastfed baby!)
Sounds like me when I was a baby. You might want to check her for celiac sprue an allergy to gluten.

I would call your pediatricians office and ask to speak to a nurse. Tell them your situation and see what their advice is. Babies that little should not be going three days with out pooping. They should still be pooping several times a day. Dont stress - just call (remember - its their job to answer these questions). I hope she poops soon for you. :)
When I first started my son on formula, he would go about three days without pooping too. And what a gross mess when he finally went! But the dr. said as long as it was still soft when he pooped, (even a little runny) everything was fine. She advised against switching to another formula for a little over a week or two so his body had time to adjust. He did, and now he's back to once/day. Obviously you'll make the choice that's best for you about whether you want to drop the formula altogether. Because of the pooping issue, I did ween more slowly than I otherwise would have, but again, he's doing very well now. If you're really concerned, call the dr and see if they recommend a little diluted apple juice to get her going.
i just had this problem this past fall with my son. he wasnt taking formula though, just breastfeeding. the doctors had me going as far as giving him suppositories and enemas. i felt so horrible!!! they had me stop drinking milk, still nothing. finally he was 4 months old and i started feeding him solids and he started going. sometimes up to 4 times a day! so, although she is too little for solids for a while, i would try not drinking milk myself, and maybe try her on soy formula. that should help also.
i hope that she starts to feel better soon and that i have helped you in any way!
good luck!!

I don't have experience with formula..
But I will tell you my experience with poop or the lack of. My daughter after pass her poop and then a few after in the first week, had gone about 21 days with out a poop. Please note that we call the doctor after 5 day and then saw the doctor on the 11th day.
They suggested prune juice. Also a friend of mind, her friend’s husband who is a pediatric nurse suggested use a lubricated q-tip or lubricated thermometer. It works like magic within a day. My poor husband was so stressed and didn’t understand that not everyone has a movement everyday like clock work.
Also breastmilk is highly digestible and baby will take what they need from it.
After that she would good every 10 days up till 6mos old, know she between every day and every 3 days.
Also the big thing does her having wet diaper? Ask your doctor about the time span (every 4 or 6 hours.)
I hope this helps… Good luck.. =)
She may have an irritial bowel syndrome. Where she has a lot of stored up bowel but until the gas passes through she will not be able to have a bowel movement. Plus if she is switching back and forth, she is drinking breast milk which comes from whatever your diet is. Hope this helps. If you need to call your daughter's doctors' office just to talk to the nurse on duty go ahead that is why they are there is to help.
As a nurse and a Mom, take her temperature rectally. Actually you don't really need her temp, but the lubricated thermometer will help to get her bowels moving. We had the same problem with my second son, he was 9 weeks preemie and had trouble with his bowels with the formula changes and this worked like a charm! Sometimes it took a few times a day, but it definately helped. Good luck!!
Make sure that she is getting as much water as she will take. I would personally never use formula, but goat's milk. Goat milk is the closet thing to mama milk and it is a natural laxative as well. You can buy it at Market Basket, or PM me and I can tell you a farm around you to get it from.
I would say that this is a clear indication that her body is reacting negatively to the formula. Baby's bodies are like brand new cars. They're in perfect mechanical shape until we mess them up. When her baby body is saying "no", it's best to listen to its wise advice. My baby was allergic to everything when I brought her from China. She's adopted. At 5 months, I couldn't feed her dairy or soy milk, or formula. She was breaking out in rashes, having gas, and getting constipated. I resorted to making my own formula with the very finest ingredients I could find including whey powder, which helped a little. I was just lucky in the end to find a hospital that donated some pasteurized breastmilk to sick babies, and that was the only thing that finally cleared her of her allergies. Don't forget that any strain to a body is a strain on the liver, the kidneys, and other bodily organs. Breastmilk is the very best thing you could give your baby because it has those wonderful substances in it that will boost her immune system. If you could just keep her on breastmilk for as long as you can, you'll be building the strongest little body ever. Like I said, breastmilk saved my little girl's life. It truly is gold.

When my baby became constipated I would give him a quarter teaspoon of milk of magnesia (mom). It worked wonders and I only had to do it a few times and when he was about 3 months old. You shouldn't let your baby go another day without a bowel movement, it just gets harder and harder for them. Have you tried giving him a little more breastmilk, and some more water? My baby had lots of gas, as well. Just try giving her some gasx for babies, too. This should help move things along. good luck.
My son was having trouble in his bowel movement and wasn't going daily for it. I tried babies magic tea and no such problem occurred again.
Hi V., This happened when I was switching my now 6 month old twins over from breastmilk to formula. They had very sporadic bowel movements. Our home visiting nurse told me that it can take a bit for their bodies to adjust to digesting formula vs. breastmilk and not to worry about gas or constipation. Ultimately, they did adjust just fine.
