Thanksgiving Bonuses

What is the going rate for a Thanksgiving bonus for a nanny? Is this something they expect or just a nice to do? We have a nanny that supplements our regular nanny (who does 4 days a week). The new one comes only 2x per month and we gave her $50 for Thanksgiving. She didn't seem to appreciate it and seems to be all about the money. Should I be worried or am I overreacting?

What can I do next?

First, I rarely hear of a thanksgiving bonus given to nannies, so she is a lucky one.

Second, 50 bucks is a LOT, esp considering she only comes twice a month! She she is lucky, again. Many full time childcare providers don't even get that much during xmas time.

Third, beware of this lady. If she is 'all about the money' then she may not be very into her job and thus, genuinely not really care for your children. Hopefully, she is not a slacker with them when you are not around.

Overall, people should be appreciative of whatever gift is given to them, even if it is a blessing. Those who expect too much (like this lady) out of life are never happy. Good luck.

Hi L.
I'm not a nanny but I would think since she's only working 2x a month, she should be pretty happy. Heck, full time nannies and teachers don't get that nice of a bonus for the whole year! Also if you say she is all about money, then I think you might want to look into replacing her. The sort of person who takes care of your kids (the most precious peopole in your life) should not be all about money. They should be all about the kids. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it. $50 for Thanksgiving is NICE. She doesn't work that much for you, so she should be granted that she got the $50. It bothers me when people expect things like money, it is a gift and should be treated as such. Don't worry about it at ALL. It was nice of you to give her that.

I guess my question would be - what do you mean by "she didn't seem to appreciate it"? Did she not say thank you when she received it? Did she not write you a thank you note? Did she say "Fifty bucks? That's it? Wow, that's cheap!"

If she said 'thank you' and acknowledged the gift, then you may be overreacting. Personally, I've never heard of a Thanksgiving bonus. Holiday bonuses in December, yes. Any other time of the year, no.
