Testicular Issue??

My son just turned 7 today and unfortunately has the flu. I put him in the bath to help break his fever and wash him since he was stinky from being sweaty off and on. (also he needed some reminding on how to bathe lol) When I was washing him I noticed one of his testicles hung about twice as low as the other one. I know that some size difference is normal but this was a large difference. It also looked like it was just skin and there wasn't actually a testicle in it. I asked my dad about it and he wasn't sure and said to ask a doctor about it. I didn't say anything to my son about it because I didn't want to scare him or make him think he's weird. Is this normal or should I see about getting him a doctor's appt. TIA!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the help! I asked him if it had been hurting him at all and he said no. I haven't checked it again, mostly b/c he won't let me. I am going to ask my ex husband to check him this weekend when he has them. Again thanks for all the advice!

The testicles are mobile inside the scrotal sac, so maybe they both were over to one side when you noticed the empty skin. He was in the bath, so maybe he got cold and they moved around a bit. The other day I was changing my son's diaper and I freaked out because it looked like they weren't there at all, and I couldn't feel anything in there, but he was just cold and when he was relaxed in the warm bath later on all was where it should be. So I guess my point is to check again and see if it's still like that, and if maybe they are both over to one side. Also, ask him if he's hurt himself recently (sports, kicked, fell on something, etc.) and if he has any discomfort. You could then call your pedi's office and speak to the nurse to see if this is suspicious and warrants an appointment. The more information you give the nurse the better they'll be able to address your concern. Hope all is well!

You never noticed this before? If this is new, take him to the doctor. You don't have to scare him with details, just say we have a doctor appointment. My kids never asked why they went to the doctor, they just did.

Usually one hangs lower than the other but he might have one that hasnt descended.. It would be a good idea to have your pediatrician take a look. My oldest was about that age when I noticed the same thing and it turned out he had a hernia, once he had the surgery his nut went back to normal.

Yes, get it checked. Both my son (at age 2) and my husband (as a teenager) had something called a hydrocoele. It's basically a water-filled sac in the testicle, usually on 1 side, that can be caused by the hole not closing when the testicle descends. It's not a very big deal, but they do usually need to do day surgery to correct it.

Hi J.,

My hubby just had the flu and he told me he could tell he had a fever because his testicles were trying to run away! When the body gets hot, the testicles hang lower to protect themselves. Just like when the body gets cold, they shrivel up and try to get closer to the warmth of the body.

Hope this helps
