Please help! I had took some wellness formula tablets a couple of weeks ago when I was sick but on the bottle it says do not take if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. I found out a couple of days ago that I was pregnant. So without knowing it i had taken the pills when I was like 2 or 3 weeks pregnant. Is it going to harm my baby?

What can I do next?

How would a public forum of moms and dads ( Internet strangers) know if you are ok or not???

Call and ask your Dr.
Call the company who made the medicine you took and ask.

I realize you're scared but we are not medical specialists. Seek a medical specialist to gather this information.

Welcome to mamapedia!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

You should talk to your OB/GYN about what you took, how much you took and for how long.

Since I don't know WHAT you took, how much you took or how long you took it for?? Nor am I a doctor or pharmacist. Please see your doctor.

There should be an 800 number on the back of the bottle. Call that and tell them your situation.

If they are not open on the weekend? Call your pharmacist or go to see your pharmacist with the supplement that you took.

Another option is to talk to you OB/GYN. You can't undo this. Don't stress over it, you're not helping yourself or your baby.

These are questions that you always take to your doctor.

But FYI many things carry a warning not because there is a proven side effect, but simply because some of the ingredients haven't been tested specifically for pregnancy. I work in food science and I know that the rules on labeling don't necessarily indicate a problem. So the warning you read doesn't mean there's anything wrong.

Without the name of the product or the ingredient list, though, there's nothing we can tell you specifically.

Probably not.
No way for anyone to know for sure.
Start taking prenatal vitamins if you haven't already.

In large doses, herbal supplements can be as strong as medicine. That's the concern. Some herbal remedies should not be taken by pregnant women. You can get a full list of the ingredients if you call the 1 800 number for the product, or if you check their website, they will list them all. Take that information into your doctor, and just let her know how much you took and when.

I don't mean to alarm you. It's just some herbal remedies do things like thin blood, etc. so that's the concern. Probably nothing wrong - but ask your doctor. She should just be aware of any kind of medical or herbal supplements you've taken. Good luck and congratulations!

Dear A.,

So many responses said to see your OB/GYN - while that is certainly a valid option, please know that you could also consult a midwife. Many OB/GYNs will not see you until you are 8-10 weeks (at least in South Florida) but midwives tend to be willing to see you when you are ready to see them.

Cheers,
C.

You need to make an appointment with your OB/GYN. They need to know what the medication is. Then they'll do some research to see if there is potential danger and perhaps be able to tell if there is a problem.

You can't undo it at this point. Panicking does no good. Obviously, don't take any more. I would bring the package to your health care provider just in case. But try not to panic. If you are talking 2 weeks after day 1 of the pregnancy, the fertilized egg was probably not even implanted yet, so it would not have been sharing your blood. People take/do all kinds of things before they know they are pregnant with no ill effects. I took half a pack of birth control with my first, and my son has yet to grow breasts :). Don't beat yourself up about it, just be as healthy as you can for the rest of the pregnancy.

Oh, and you may be able to check the ingredients online. Drugs have different grades for risk during pregnancy, and you may find that the risk is quite low. Unless it is X (known teratogen, like chemo drugs) I wouldn't worry a bit.

Don't ask this here. Ask your ob/gyn. Take the bottle with you to the doctor so he or she can see it.

Some medications say not to take because it has been proven to be harmful, & others have the same warning because the effects on a fetus are not known.

Without knowing the name of the product or manufacturer, I can't tell you anymore than that, but your pharmacist should be able to look that up for you. Don't take any more now that you know you are pregnant (congratulations!!) & if you were taking them for an ongoing reason, talk to your pharmacist or doctor to find a safe alternative.

I would say probably not. It takes a little time for the placenta to develop. This is mother nature's way of safeguarding the baby in the early weeks of pregnancy before you know you're pregnant. Nevertheless, bring the medicine package with you to your first OB appointment and discuss it with your doctor. Best wishes!

call the questions/comments number or the manufacturere of the wellness formula and talk to them about why it shouldn't be taken by a pregnant woman or a woman who may become pregnant...
take that information as well as a complete ingredient list to the dr or midwife and talk to them about it to see if it will harm your baby
