We spent the day out and when we got back I noticed 2 little balls on each side of the lower neck of my 1 and 9 month old son... I'm dead worried because I have no idea what it is... I noticed the left ball first when he turned his neck, then I touched it and found the same size ball on the right side... Could it be swollen glands??? I will be bringing him to the doctor tomarrow as soon as I can get an appointment... He doesn't have a fever, just a mild cough... What worries me the most is that he had a urinary infection when he was 4 months old, and fortunatly it has not repeated itself but he is regularly checked to see how his kidneys are doing because the right one works more promptly than the left one... He does have 100 % renal function... Has any one experienced a similar situation??? Could the little balls (I'm asuming they are glands) have anything to do with his urinary tract? I look forward to your comments...

So What Happened?

A MILLION THANKS to all of you who shared my concern and kindly responded with your experiences and advice. I took my little boy to the dr and fortunately it turned out to be exactly what you all expected--glands attacking a virus and it had nothing to do with his kidneys or urinary tract. We also had his urine checked and it was super good. I can not put into words how much I have appreciated your responses... BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL. A.

Your lymph system's job is to "filter" your blood and to fight infection. When the nodes are swollen, they are doing their job. If you feel your own neck, you can sometimes feel them there as well (even when they're not swollen you can sometimes feel them, little ones have less padding so that's why you may be noticing them--but a good idea to see the dr anyway if you're concerned).

My son had the same thing about a year or so ago, he was 3 at the time. I took him to the Dr as I was thinking strep throat or tonsilitis, it turned out to be swollen glands. No infections or any other problems. There is no meds they can give for this it will just go away on it's own, in due time. Good Luck!

My son gets these too, anytime he is sick on the sides of his neck. And you mentioned your son has a cough now, so that is a sign that his body is fighting the infection. Young children do not typically have ample fat stores like adults especially on the neck, and that's why they don't show often on adults. They will probably go away a week or so after he's finished with the cough. I doubt your doctor will give him any medicine. Unless they are super hard like a pebble or stone, there is no issue with them.

his lymph nodes are swollen because there is an infection in his body. it could be urinary or anywhere else. there are also lymph nodes under the armpits, and in the groin, so check those, too. He'll need antibiotics so take him in to doc asap.

Hi A.,

I had a friend who's 3 year old son had the same thing - very swollen lumps on the back of his neck - just last week. They had him in urgent care and then the emergency room but it turned out to be just a bad virus. I would guess that is probably what your sons have but I would definitely take them to the doctor to get a diagnosis from him! Good luck!

I just had my 23 mo old at the dr for this. She said that it is perfectly normal for kids glands to swell. My older son has it too and I only noticed it yrs ago when he turned his head and it bulged out. I took him too and another dr ran tests, etc and said no problem. No need to worry.

My 4 yr old gets this occasionally as well. It seems to come and go. I know he has allergies and I think it is when he is fighting off an infection. I would just double check with the Dr. but I wouldn't worry unless they give you something to worry about. I think we all go through this when we are fighting something off. I think it's our bodies own defense. Best of luck :).
