Switching Preschools/Daycare

Hi there. I switched my sons preschool/daycare (they do preschool in the am) last summer, because of where I was living at the time, it was closer to home. Well, long story short, we have since moved, now we spend a lot of time driving and spending more on gas. I can move my son (who is 5 now) back to his previous daycare, which he liked or continue to make the drive. He says that he does not want to go back to the previous one, but when we originally left there, he did not want to do that either so.... Cost wise, I think that it will be almost a wash, but the time savings, since the one I want him at is 5 minutes from work, versus 25 minutes to the other one, would be a drastic difference, and the one closer to me is open later.... I could have an extra 2 hours in my day, for work or "me" time, and I need that as a single mother. As far as the schooling/care goes I think that they are the same. He has friends at both, so I dont think that is an issue. I guess I am looking for any advice or expierences that you can share. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

S., this is a slam dunk. Change him back to the 5 min from home day care.
1. He will know kids there and be just a happy kid
2. You will have more time for him and yourself
3. You will have less endangerment time on the road. Think about it - 5 minutes in traffic vs 25 min in traffic. Statistics show the more you drive the better your chance for an accident. And the further you go the chances are that you will run into traffic problems and then you have to speed and take chances in order to get to work on time.

I had 2 grade schools my kids could go to. One was on a highway and the other in a neighborhood. I had the kids going to the neighborhood school when ever i could if there was room. So both of them went to both schools and never had a problem. Met more kids and jr high was old home week!!

GIVE NOTICE TOMORROW AND SIGN HIM UP AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

I think that as the parent you need to decide what is in the best interest of you and your family. If having him at the closer daycare will save you time and money I personally would do it. If both daycares are similar, then the consideration becomes one of sanity on your part. Think about which one will give you more sanity when the day is over--the one that you have to leave an extra 30 minutes earlier to make sure that you can get to work on time, or the one that is closer to home and less stressful. Sometimes as a parent you not only have to think about what is best for the child, but also what is best for you. Besides if you are going to save money you could put the expected savings away for a special vaction or something like that for you and your son. Good luck with the decision.

Oh hunny have I been in your shoes! I think we wear the same size! :). I say switch him back. That 25 minutes one way equals to be almost 1 hour a day! I was a single mom until a year ago so I know how detrimental one hour can be in our busy days. A 5 year old might not like it at first... probably just not for the first day. But if he has friends, he must already be a social guy, so he will re-adapt quickly. We just had to do that back in November and it was a GREAT decision! And children (especially active boys) don't like to be in the car any longer than they have to. Good Luck!

S.: I would switch to the one that is 5 minutes from your work and make a really big deal (maybe even have a party!) that he gets to go back there. I might feel differently if he didn't have friends there. He is 5 and it's "only" preschool"--it's ok to do something that is best for mommy once in a while...good luck with your decision!
