Struggling to Make It

I am a single mother of two little boys, 2 and 4. Their father just left in December to live in Michigan with a woman he met online. This was not a surprise to me as this was our second attempt at being married and this is the same thing that happened before. I remarried with the hope that he had and would change for his children, he didnt. That is all beside the point....I lost my job in January and am not receiving any income at all right now. I am waiting for the medicaid and food stamps to be approved, in the meantime I have had my electric turned off as well as my water. Does anyone know of any other options that I may have to get some assistance with my bills or does anyone know of any businesses that are hiring? I am in southwest Fort Worth and have a lot of experience in customer service and collections/call centers as well as general office work.

What can I do next?

I see that others have made my suggestion, but just to echo. Call 211. It is available from any phone in Tarrant County and will go directly to the United Way, who has an extensive list of the services available in Tarrant County. They can give you contact information on each. Good luck to you!!!

wow! i definatly know how it feels to be struggling! so my prayers are with you! keep in mind one thing and this is the only thing that got me through really hard times, if you put all your faith in god he will deliver maybe not when you want him too, but i promise he will, you just have to be strong and trust him. i cried everynight not knowing how we were going to pay rent, or buy food and diapers, we actually werent even going to do christmas but somehow the lord made it work and we are finally on track. so here is some things in know about assistance, you can call 211 and they can tell you numbers and where to go for assistance with utilities, and i think you can sign up for help with childcare at the medicaid office, ask your case worker also if your not already on it you probabley qualify for wic if you need the number for that let me know and i will send it to you. as for jobs, you can try americredit, ive heard that they hire frequently, but if you really need something right now try for temp service they will definalty get you in somewhere and maybe you can find something permanent. good luck and god bless! let me know if you need some numbers or anything else.

S.,

I am so sorry you are having problems. It is tough enough with 2 small children even being married, so I can only imagine what you are going through. I do have some suggestions. First, I don't know if you are religous or not, but I would def. pray and thank god for the blessings you do have, also you may want to check with your church or a local church for some assistance. I know alot of churches have some form of aid for struggling families. Also, I don't know if you have ever heard of Angel food Ministires. They have food every month once a month for 20 dollars or so. It is a bunch of food mostly freezer food and staples , but it will be very helpful and it is good food. You can go to www.angelfoodminstries.org I think that is the website for local churches who provide this in your area. Also, I don't know if you have looked into working around the Cleburne-Joshua-Burleson area, but the gas well indusrty is really booming down here and they may need some offic help. Also, you may be able to find work through a temp angency, like Mann Power or something. These are just some thoughts. I personally don't know of anyone hiring right now, but If I here of anything I will let you know. We will keep you in our prayers.

I am sad to hear about your situation, but there is hope for a bright future for you all. First, I encourage you to contact the Women's Center of Tarrant County. They offer employment assistance and counseling of all kinds. Here's a link to find out more: http://www.womenscenter.info/. The Salvation Army is another good resource. Here's their link: http://www.uss.salvationarmy.org/fortworth. If they cannot specifically help you, they can probably direct you to another agency. Best wishes and may God bless you and your boys.

S. D., I am from West Texas and I know there are agencies that help people who are struggling financially and I suppose there are similar group here in the Metro-Plex. You may want to contact the Texas Work Force Center to see if there are any programs that help with bills. Also contact your place of worship, many have programs that also help with utility bills, and many have food programs through the food banks-you many even contact the food bank yourself. As for the job, call ALL temp agencies, they'll be able to put you to work almost imediately. The only other advice I can tell you is to contact all family, including your inlaws to see if any of them can help you out.

If you've gone to Human Resources, they have other types of assistance besides food stamps. just check everything on the application. They also have a work source class you can go to to try to find work and get training. If you have experience I would also suggest a temp agency to get you started while you're looking for permanent work. Especially if you have a reliable and free or cheap babysitter. Otherwise go online or to the newspaper to look for places that are hiring. Call centers are always hiring and they usually have ads in the paper and all over the place.

Good luck and God bless.

I don't have any info on jobs, however, as far as groceries and couponing, if you have internet access on a consistent basis, you might joing the Yahoo group, "howtogetthingsforfree" You can do a search for it under Yahoo Groups. It has been very informative to me, and I was already couponing a whole lot. Another bit of advice is to get a CVS card, and start buying things there, using your card and mfg. coupons out of the newspaper, and buy things out of the ad, that give you Extra Care Bucks (ECB) back, so that you can keep buying more items (hopefully try to find items that you and your kids/babies will use-diapers/wipes/medicines/etc) that will give you ECB back, and you can get things for next to nothing, or for pennies on the dollar. I shop there every week, and get lots of stuff for very little money. Example: this week: Zyrtec for my 2 yr old, Pledge polish, Gillette Fusion Razor, and Softsoap Liquid, all for less than $6!!! And...I got $7 in extra care bucks back to use on a purchase for my next trip. So I'd look into that to help compensate for some of your shopping needs. Hope this helps.
Have a blessed day!

There are churches that will help pay your utilities for you, and all you need to do is ask. Also, there is a church in Haltom City off of Glenview that has groceries on Tuesdays that are little to no money.

Just call local churches and ask what they can help you with. Good luck.

You must go to the church to place a Food Stamp order, it requires a signature.

One of my favorites is the 10 lbs box of chicken, per battered, $18.00 for the box, $1.80 an lbs. You have to buy at least one of the main $30.00 packages to get to the specials. I am a single parent of three, and we eat it every month.

You should really join a large church with a big singles ministry, so you can find a QUALITY Christian man next time. Look for one the is Knee deep in service work, that way you have better assurance that he is a real Christian, not one that is using the church as a dating service.

Put the good Lord first in your life, and everything else will eventually fall into place.

Good Luck,

P.

I am really sorry to hear about your husband. Alliance in Fort Worth is hiring. Good luck! See info below.
Alliance-area company will hire up to 800

By BOB COX

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Fast-growing ATC Logistics & Electronics plans to hire up to 800 new employees in the coming months for its Alliance-area shipping and repair centers as it increases capacity to handle demand from electronics manufacturers.

The company, which occupies three buildings and nearly 1 million square feet of space in the Alliance area of far north Fort Worth, warehouses, packs and ships cellphones, GPS units and other devices for a range of manufacturers and provides test and repair services for returned items.

Most of the new jobs will be full-time, with wages from $9 to $15 an hour plus benefits. The company is also looking for additional supervisory, management and technical people.

"Our business is really growing," said Kevin Giles, vice president of human resources.

"We've got a pretty large challenge ahead of us over the next six to eight months."

ATC employs about 2,700 people, including some workers from temporary services. It has employed up to 3,000 workers.

ATC has logistics contracts with most of the major cellphone carriers and their manufacturers, as well as with Palm and General Motors, among others.

It recently signed a multiyear contract with TomTom to handle U.S. distribution, logistics and repairs of mobile GPS navigation devices.

Giles said the company moved into a third warehouse facility last year and is "already pretty close to filling it up. It's been exceptional growth year-over-year the last several years."

I know it's tough now, goin it alone, but it's best not to be with someone who isn't totally in your corner. Make the BEST family for you & the two kids, and your life WILL turn around.

My husband works for Chase Bank, they are usually hiring, especially for tellers. They are opening several new branches by the end of the year. With your customer service experience, you also might be able to get an SSA (not a teller, sits at a desk, answers phones and customer questions, helps customers when needed) job.

Most places seem to hire from their temporary pool. So get on temporary and show them what you can do (Example Kelly girls; manpower, etc.) Check on computer either at home or at library the websites and apply. Check into TCU a great working environment and can further education; FWISD can keep you busy whether on temp. or employed; check Alcon Laboratory for job openings.

As for assistance now Check out the Southwest or Westside Aide they can tell you which place to go to for assistance depending on your zip code. Also, with electric company and any other--talk to them and explain your situation and see what they can do. Sometimes just explaining and willingness to pay on a plan that you can really do will encourage them to assist you. Don't be afraid to ask for help the worst they can do is say no and if they do help then you are better off.

As for the children the YWCA downtown has a wonderful daycare for struggling parents. Check it out. Also, ask your pastor at your church for guidance and assistance.

May God bless you and guide you. A.

When my husband lost his job and we were pregnant with our 4th child the Health and Human services got us right in when I told them it was an emergency. They will also allow you to apply for TANF - temporary assistance for needy families. You need to go to where your office is located and drive them crazy! There are a lot of people who mooch off the gov't so they are not going to think anything by making you wait unless you prove otherwise. Also, do go get WIC! This is something that will really help you out. Also, check into www.anglefoodministries.com. You can get a lot of food for $25 and they accept food stamps. Have you contacted you electricty provider, they will work with you but you have to be upfront with them about your situation. We attend Lifechurch.tv in Fort Worth off of Granbury Rd and I 20W. and they say that if we know anyone in need of help have them contact the church. It would be best if you went to the church location and talked with them. My name is M. (my husband is David) and I work with the kids in Konnect. They will know who I am.

Hi S.,

I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal. Pretty much the same thing happened to me about 3 months ago, my husband left because he was tired of being a responsible adult. It wasn't another woman but he left and emptied the bank account and has yet to give me money for the baby. I was a stay at home mom our entire marriage and so I know how scary it is to have no money and bills to pay. What I did is signed up for monster.com, careerbuilder.com, jobs.com. jobings.com, snagajob.com and a few other sites and sent out my resume. I also went to Appleone and they are great at getting you in the door for interviews. They have a website you should go to first and fill out all the nessary information and you can even set up your own time and day to go see them. Hope that helps a little. I also have call center/customer service expericence and just got a job. Good luck
