I was asked by a co-worker today how to get a child to not bite. Her grandson is 18 months old and is biting kids in his daycare. Fortunately, I don't have this problem. Do you have suggestions on getting a child not to bite others?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

In our experience at Countryside Montessori, usually they are teething or getting more social and need help learning what to say. We shadow them, ,stop them with a louder firmer voice than normal, then in a regular voice tell them what to do or say. Give the teethers a teething ring. If you do this each time, they usuaaly stop. If not try time out. ALSO make sure no one plays biting games such as animals, the gonna get your fingers game and such.

Unfornately I have been through 2 biting kids :) They were both in the 12 month - 24 month age range. It just took time and persistence. Her daycare should start really watching and redirecting as soon as they start to see him starting to bite. My daycare really worked with me on this and worked on getting my kids attention redirected and off the biting. It just takes time and redirection ! I wish there was a magic cure for this !

My mother always stopped them by biting them back so they would know how it felt.... I know this sounds drastic, but I think it works...

My daughter used to bite at school, but never at home, she knew she would really get in trouble, not just a 'firm' no no. Anyway, she finally bit my neice in front of me. Well, I bit her back. It was the most horrible thing I've ever done. Not because it hurt (it didn't even leave a mark), but it hurt her feelings. Well, she never bit again. My mom had to bite be back as kid, and she said that I never bit after that.
