Glucosamine chondroitin, It takes a while to start working, so keep with it, and after about a month you will really start to see an improvement. I have arthritis in both of my knees, and this helps a great deal.
My husband has taken a daily Glucosamine (and he is 28) supplement for 3 years for a knee that would constantly pop and sometimes squeak. As long as he stays on it the popping and squeaking cease to exist.
Most likely it is arthritis. Make an appt with your primary care physician and ask for advice. I have it and I'm not even 30!! (Not doing my knees any favors by carrying extra weight around with me for the past 15 years.) Bad knees run in my family, and my aunts who have knee arthritis have experienced much relief from Glucosamine supplements, low impact exercises such as swimming, and losing weight.
Consider taking glucosamine and chondroitin now. My family has a history of knee problems (my sis and dad both had surgery), and I noticed the feel of the grind pretty early. I exercise a lot (not running!), so I decided to use a glucosamine and chondroitin mix. My husband (who does run) also takes a supplement now. Mine's a liquid, his is in pill form.
Do make sure, as you age, that you pay attention to your knees, especially to any pain or soreness. It seems as if you are already paying attention, though! :)
Glucosamine chondroitin has kept me moving 11 years since turning 50. I can not take anti-inflamitories and have mild arthritis.
I can't even remember when my knees started squeaking (I am in my early 30's). I didn't even think of doing something about it! I will check in to see if there are any good suggestions.
Hi L.,
Medically speaking, joints that make sounds, but are not painful in any way, are not abnormal in any way.
I inherited noisy joints from my parents: my feet "pop" when I walk, and I have one occasionally creaky knee - LOL!
It's true, people with arthritis *also* can have noisy joints, but they will tell you that sound means they are feeling *pain.*

Don't start popping pills randomly. Make an appointment with your doctor to find out of it is arthritis or something else. While not a huge deal, the grinding/squeaking could be a number of issues and likely easily remedied after a trained medical professional examines you.
