Hi-

Can anyone reccomend a mini spring break for a family!! I'm looking to take my 2 girls(ages 8 and 6), husband and myself somewhere maybe within 6 hours or less of driving time from Chicago and where there will be something for all of us to enjoy!! Nothing over pricey! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Camping, etc..

What can I do next?

Hi M., I would really recommend Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. It's a lot of fun for kids and adults. You might need a couple of days to see and do everything. We've been there before and and are hoping to go again this spring/summer.

Mammoth Caves in Kentucky is awesome if you're a camping family. The weather can be iffy, but inside the caves the weather is always perfect! Take some extra cash to buy rocks/geodes/crystals from the stands on the side of the road on your way to the state park from the highway - cheap! We are thinking about going agian this year. Prepare for it to rain a least part of the time!!!

St. Joseph MI is really nice. There is a children's museum there and the beach is really nice to walk on, although it will be too cold to get in the water. My son loves picking up shells and 'interesting' rocks there! There are a lot of things to do within an hour or so's drive from there as well.

Also, St. Louis is only 5 hours away. A great zoo, the Arch, lots of family things to do there too! good luck!

When ours where young we took them to Dearborn, MI to Greenfield Village, it is about a 5 hour drive if I remember right.
Here is a link to their site: http://www.hfmgv.org/

We are going next month because our youngest (who will be 27 next month) is coming in on leave from the Air Force and wanted to there again because he remembered it from when we visted. They have an outside village comprised of many historic homes (Websters, Tom Edison's Factory, etc.) a train, farm and much more. They also have a museum with many interesting items from history to now.

We usually stay at the Embassy Suites near by as this used to give the give thier "own" room and the price includes breakfast.
