Does anyone make soap and can point me to the right direction on how I can learn to do it? I would like to learn how to make natural soaps as a hobby and for my family to use. Is it an expensive hobby? I already scrapbook but I am looking for something new. TIA

What can I do next?

Teachsoap.com and millerssoap.com are good starting places. How old are your kidsi? Do you have any pets that are underfoot with the kids? If they are under 6 do this after they go to bed or are in school. You will be using lye (caustic soda or sodium hydroxide) to make the soap. Post me and I can give you more details.

Soapmaking can become addictive and that you want to make more and more and that means you have to have space to store your soaps. The expense for soaping depends on the oils and fats used exituc are more than your aveage corn, soy, olive, coconut, castor oils tallow and lard. Yes you can make soap that will be much better than the store stuff and you can make it to wash clothes.

Good luck to you.

I have made little decorative soaps for gifts and party favors. You can get all the supplies at Michaels or other hobby stores. They have blocks of glycerin and olive oil soaps, scented oils, coloring, and so on. They also have molds of all kinds for fun shapes. None of this is expensive, and you can get a small amount of supplies and try it out, then expand if you are enjoying yourself. You made me think about it. I may dig that stuff out and try again!

well I know that lye can be made from ashes like from a fire & glycerin is made from animal fats & you cook it all in a big pot but that's about all I know. Perhaps you can find the info on a web search?? Sorry I can't be more helpful. I did see a program on a cable channel that showed pretty much how to make natural soaps but I'm sorry I can't recall the steps to give you. Good luck & have fun making your soap!

I have made 2 batches of soap in the past. I decided to wait till my kids were older though because my oldest was under 2 then and was under my feet. I was using lye in my soap making process and was afraid I would trip over him and spill it on him. Lye can cause serious burns if it come in contact with your skin.

I actually went to my local library and checked out books on soap making. You can also find books on soap making at your local craft stores.
