Sooo... I really have no clue which foods are better for energy and which foods are more for filling... If you know some of the more common for either could you please let me know them? My main reasons for wanting to know is so I can know which foods to avoid feeding my DD before bed, and also so I know which foods to eat myself when I know I can use the extra energy for the day. Thanks mommas!! :) (I would especilly like to know which foods are best for 'dinner' for a 1 year old, that won't keep her up all night! lol.)
Energy food would include a combo of nuts and raisins, but don't overdue it!
Comforting food would be soups with bread or crackers, pasta and proteins with starch (meat and potatoes) and veggies.
The key to getting her down is to cut out the sugary snacks and juices. Replace them with milk and water and serve juice sparingly.
with my gestational diabetes, the nutritionist recommended graham crackers & milk. She swore they provided the maintenance I would need to carry thru the night....& she was right! It worked for me to the point that I kept equalized & never had to use insulin. My DH is a diabetic & uses grah crax to stabilize thru the night, too. Because they are made with whole wheat, they are a complex carbohydrate & take longer to break down = a good night's sleep!
Foods to avoid before bed: any simple sugar food...sweets, ice cream, juice, etc. Anything containing fats. Keep it healthy!
carbs are good for energy, of course sweets and sugars are for energy. turkey makes you sleepy. I have not had any issues with a child getting energy unless it was sugary so hopefully that won't effect your child either. I would make the usual protein, veggie, and carb. spaghetti with meatsauce, chk and veggie with potato, etc don't feed her too late and get her a warm bath before bed if you can to relax her. If you don't bathe at night, have a routine after dinner where you wind her down. Get her jammies on then head to her room to read to her under a soft light. If you have a noise machine in her room (they are GREAT) then you can turn it on as background to get her sleepy. Read to her either in a chair in your lap or lay her in her crib and you sit next to the crib.
