Has anyone had any experience w/a sleep deprived EEG? Any and all info will be helpful, especially if your child had it done at Cook Children's and they were under 1 yrs old. TIA Moms!

*Edit*
We are looking at a 6 hour video EEG where he needs to be sleep deprived for 4 hours. I am just concerned about keeping him awake that long and how much room will he have to move around during that time. How is the staff (i.e. do they understand that your child is acting up because they have had no sleep, etc.)? How long did it take to get the results in?

What can I do next?

My daughter had a sleep deprived EEG when she was 5 at Cook's. Her EEG was scheduled for 2 p.m. and we were told to keep her awake for 12 hours prior. My husband woke her up at 2 a.m. and then he kept her awake by playing computer games with her all night long and then we kept her active up until the EEG. The idea is for the child to relax and fall asleep during the EEG. She fell asleep instantly--as soon as the technician turned off the lights and left the room. The staff was amazing and yes, they do understand that childen who are sleep deprived can be extremely fussy. If I recall, we had the results within a couple of days.

Overall, it's a very easy process. However, I imagine there is a big difference going through the process with a 5 year old vs. a 1 year old. At least I could explain "why" to my daughter.

Good luck!!!

Hi A.,

I had a sleep deprived EEG on my son a few years ago and they were wonderful with my son. He was cranky from not being allowed to sleep, but it was completely understood! The person who did it made it so pleasant that my son felt comfortable and even smiled for pictures! I know it sounds weird, but I wanted to have the memory of all of those wires on his head. Luckily, he was completely healthy. I wish you guys the best of luck and may God bless you and your family.

I won't say don't worry, becaus you are a mom and that is just not possible. But I can say that Cooks Childrens is one of the best places you can take your child. My son who is 5 had a sleep deprived EEG about a week ago and the staff is great. As for the no sleep it may be harder on you than your baby. Be prepared for some crankyness and crying. During the EEG they will most likely have your baby go to sleep so that will help. I hope all goes well with your baby and also that this info. helps. I will also keep you in my prayers.
Good luck,
G.

my son has regular eeg's at cooks, they are always sleep deprived, in fact we have another one this month. for my son they do them to monitor his seizures and to get updated information about them. they will call you with all the info. before you go, depending on the time of the appt. they will give you instructions on how sleep deprived the child will need to be. i will be honest & say that my son is never quite as sleep deprived as they want, because he is special needs & with him once he is out there is not waking him up, so he often falls back asleep after I wake him. but for him this has not affected his results. i talked to the nurse before about this & she said all you can do is keep him awake as much as possible, & if the dr. doesn't get what they need then they can always do a 24hr. eeg in the hospital (which we have also done, but for other reasons)
i'm not sure what you're wanting, but it is rather easy. just go in they hook them up & then it usually takes us about an hour or so. if you have more questions & i could be of help i'd be happy to talk to you
