Sizing Help

My 17 month old is extra long and I am struggling to figure out what size jeans to buy for her. She is currently wearing an 18-24 pair that fit perfectly in terms of length but are slightly big in the waist --she is skinny. Therein lies my problem: I've been buying her 2T dresses for the Fall-Winter, but with pants, I struggle with my thin, long girl. In terms of length, she is in 2T, but with weight, she is in 12-18. I cloth diaper, so this usually isn't a problem, but we are potty training and she is making good progress, so soon we won't have the diaper bulk to make her pants fit!

So, do I just buy her the bigger jeans knowing she will just grow into them and let her look funny in baggy pants for a while, or do I just buy her two pairs, one in a size 18-24 and another in a 2T (I'm looking at baby gap and there is a big difference in weight between the two). I would prefer two pairs in the same size, but I don't want to buy so big that they don't fit right until next June!

So What Happened?

Decided to hold off a few months before I buy anything.

In my experience (skinny boys) it will only get worse until she's into the preschool years. Instead of buying smaller sizes, look for brands that have an adjustable waist and come in "slim" cuts. We had a hard time with jeans, because the fabric is unforgiving - baggy looks odd - so we've avoided them for the most part. Also, you want to make sure her pants are easy to slip on and off when she is potty trained. (no buttons, no overalls.)

I also have a very skinny daughter. Different brands fit different body types. I have found that Old Navy clothes run a little on the small and skinny side, so I buy a lot of my daughters pants there. Osh Kosh Genuine Kids fits pretty well too. I bought a few pairs of pants, assuming that my daughter would grow into them. Turns out, the length was fine, but she just couldn't keep them on because of the waist size. Good luck to you.

How about trying different styles rather than sizes? Yoga pants would be comfy and reduce the bulk around the middle.

If you're looking for thinner waists, I've found that Circo (Target) and Land's End ran snug in the waist and hips.
