Should I Tip? - Flower Mound,TX

I started going to a new salon maybe a year ago only because my hairstylist moved over there. I would've never gone there on my own because it is so much more expensive than I have ever paid for a haircut before. I was told when coming there that the prices included what would normally be a tip and that they did not do extra tipping. Well, that's good because it is costing me $60 just for a cut!! That is about $15-$20 more than I paid with tip at the last place she was at and that was more than I had paid before that!! Anyway, I went there recently for my normal haircut and noticed the printout for my bankcard to sign had a place for TIP. It didn't use to have that, so I asked the receptionist if the tip was not included anymore. She kindly explained that alot of customers were insisting on being able to tip now, but it was up to me. Well, I didn't tip. I never have because their prices are so much more and they had originally told me that it was basically included. Should I have tipped her anyway? Just curious to see what anyone thinks about it. It pains me to pay that much for a haircut...................

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

To answer some questions, I am still being charged the original price. And, I AM able to pay her prices just fine. I just think that $60 is ALOT for a basic haircut. It's just a simple cut... Most salons around here are still charging around $35-$45 for a haircut.

I am a very good tipper generally. The nail salon people fight over me when I come in, so don't think I'm a total cheapskate. I just questioned tipping extra after being told it was included fro the get go.

So, I think the question still remains - is the tip still included? I think given the receptionist's answer, it is, but others want to tip MORE. I think you are OK not to tip more, so long as your stylist is STILL getting a tip just as she was before, when it was included in the price.

I could author the book "Confessions of an over-tipper" - so if I am saying you are OK, you probably are. =)

Did the amount she charge you go down? If yes, then the tip probably isn't included anymore and you should tip.

If the price has NOT gone down, plead ignorance and don't tip.

If the higher prices are actually included then no, however I think it's time you find a new hair dresser if you can not keep up with her prices. It is only natural that a hair dresser raise her prices when moving locations and after every few years she is due the increase. She does this knowing not all of her clients will be able to keep up, also knowing there will be new clients to replace them with that are able to pay her more overall. So, I think it's time to move on.

I would have done the same as you. I agree with another mama's response though...ask your actual stylist next time so you know for sure she is getting a tip out of the money you are paying. Or, if you don't want to ask your stylist, ask the manager. The receptionist's response was a bit vague if you ask me.

when I followed my colorist to a new salon and the prices went up, my COLORIST charged me what she charged me at the previous salon... Wonder why she didn't continue to charge you the same old price?

Yes, you tip. A tip is not "basically" included unless it is specifically printed on your receipt.

Tip... I'm in the DFW area and $60 plus tip is not bad at a great salon.

I pay $150 for basic cut/color. It's worth the quality to me. I tip.

Hmmmm, since you have used this person for some time I would ask her. Double tipping is just rude. I worked as the hostess/casheir for a restaurant once and for larger parties the gratuity was always on their bill. The ladies would not close out the ticket and they would always get lots, LOTS, of money extra in the tip line of the slip. I pointed it out one time to the business owner who was paying and they stopped doing this. The waitresses threw a fit and told me I was messing with their money...they were stealing from this company.

I think if she is honest she will tell you if the tip is still included. I think they have the basic charge machine, all of them are set up that way. Even the one I use at the store has that option.
