Should I Just Let It Go Already?

Long story short, I bought something through walmart dot com, Fedex delivered it late, the manufacturer wanted ME to pay for return shipping, Fedex said they'd cover it because they messed up... this was over a month ago now. I sent it back, and walmart/the manufacturer is JUST NOT being the refund process.

They (the manufacturer) charged me for the damn return shipping anyway. I'm being credited $103 instead of $129. I'm so mad but sooooo tired of this whole mess... this has been tons of back and forth for over a MONTH!!

So should I be persistent and try to get the rest of the money? I could really use it (but then again, couldn't we all?), but honestly, I'm SO OVER THIS WHOLE MESS that I wonder if I should wave my little white flag, give them all negative feedback, and call it a day.

I really can't stomach the thought of spending the rest of the week on the phone back ad forth with walmart, the manufacturer, and Fedex... what a nightmare! So do I let it go? Be persistent? Time is money... and sanity... I'm wondering if it's even worth it anymore to try.... What would you do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@Amanda, I DO have all contact information and emails from this past month... I should also note they originally wanted me to pay $59 in shipping, so a $26 loss isn't as big....

@Lisa, my train of thought exactly...

I personally am with you: eat the cost, give negative feedback and tell the company you refuse to do any more business with them because of their poor service.

When I am at a crossroads like this, I ask myself how much my time is worth. (I value my time highly :) ) and how much time I think it's going to take me to undo a wrong. If it's only going to be a few minutes, I'll work on fixing things, but if it is going to be a weeklong aggravation which won't let me move forward, I'll probably consider it "worth it" to eat the $26 dollars so I'm not peeved all week. The 'quality of living' for that week will be better. :)

I'd send them a "heart" felt letter about the money they owe you. And definitely write up the nightmare on the review site for wherever and whatever it was you bought.
In your letter make sure they know you are writing a bad review, maybe you'll get 26 bucks back eventually once you let it go and get it off your chest.

Eh - FedEx and Walmart can DEFINITELY afford an extra 26 out of their pockets. If you do persue it, I'd bring up the holidays, he heating needs of your house, the children you have to feed, and how NONE of this mumbo-jumbo was your fault, so you are "demanding" a refund on the shipping. (You could even let them know that you have a forum of moms that love you and that will help boycott their services, not to mention if they can't fix this, then you are done using their services/shopping at their store)

$26 for shipping? No way I would let that go! I am very persistent when it comes to money. Document dates, times, and who you talked to and get your money back!

ETA: $59 in shipping for a $129 item? That is ridiculous!

K's Mom: Even Walmart's bulky furniture in this price range can be shipped for $20. Rushed for $40. A major retailer like Walmart will have contracts will all the major shipping companies to keep their shipping costs down while still charging you the same price. $59 is still ridiculous. I have had furniture and mattresses shipped to my house and never paid more than $50. And those items were much more expensive than $129.

I would let it go. I know $26 is like 5 or 6 gallons of milk - how I measure everything - but is it worth your sanity? Just vow never to darken their door again and give them as much bad press as you can. It's what I did after I experienced the "layaway" policy.

If the remainder amount is the shipping and FedEx said they would cover that and you have it in writing then you follow this up. Don't let it go. Now the follow up continues with FedEx. "I received my refund for my purchase for an ongoing issue with Walmart, but I noticed that FedEx hasn't paid return shipping to Walmart/vendor yet. They're charging me for it, and I'd like to have this resolved quickly." It shouldn't be too much longer if you stay firm and sweet as apple pie.

Unless you specifically paid for a faster shipping, I don't think shipping time is guaranteed and necessarily the Manufacturers fault.

That being said, I would just let it go either way....its not worth the time and energy. However, if your persistent enough, I'm sure you can get the money back.

I would not let it go. But I am frugal. 5 or 6 gallons of milk?? I'd be upset if I dropped one gallon coming in the house, much less pouring five gallons down the drain. If you did this transaction online, I am assuming you used your credit card. Call the credit card company and dispute the extra charges. We have done this before with other retailers. Once we were charged $900 for a camera and after four weeks, it still hadn't been shipped. They tried to tell us they didn't offer refunds. Called Discover and they refunded us the charges after an investigation. While pregnant, my reciept for something I bought at Garden Ridge blew out of my hand - I was eight months pregnant, had my two year old son and was trying to manhandle a large area rug back into the store by myself, because I was told they had no one available to assist me. Without the reciept, they would only give me a store credit for the last sales price, which was $50 less that i paid. I had no issue with the store credit, but I did take issue with the $50. Called my Mastercard company and they were able to research and send me a copy of the register from the store, so I could get my full refund. More than you wanted to know, I realize. But the point is, try the credit card company before you give up. They may be willing to do the dirty work for you, especially if you have email documentation.

It wouldn't be worth it, for me. I hate dealing with that type of thing, anyway, so having to fight more after already fighting to begin with would not be something I would do for that amount of money. It's better to let it go, move on, & never order from that company again. When you have a job, kids, a home to maintain, the holidays, etc., and enough stress anyway, is it really worth holding on to something that you know will take a lot more time & energy away from your day?

I guess you have to decide what it's worth to you, and there is no right or wrong answer. I would fight it, though, because that is my personality. I imagine that they allow such situations to occur because they count on people not wanting the hassle. They know that many people will just give up. I would drag it out, just on principle. Otherwise, I'd be stewing over it alone, anyway. Why not make them come to the party? If it were the other way around, they wouldn't "let it go".

Tell them your going to contact your local media. They don't like bad publicity. Don't give up, think of how many other people this has happened to and they just give up. The company ends up making a nice profit. Call them out on their actions. This is just another reason I refuse to shop at Wal-mart. The company is the biggest bunch of liars. When they first started out it was all about MADE IN AMERICA, good luck finding one thing in that store made in the US. They cheat their employees out of ins. don't promote women, take out Ins. policy's on the employees. Dirty stores, lousy customer service. Fight the good Fight. And if I were you I would DEMAND some sort of compensation for all the trouble and aggrivation they have put you through.

First, I would read the fine print - was it clearly stated that return shipping would not be covered? And if Fed Ex is responsible, then I'd go after them.

Focus on who really should be refunding your money and I would call and tell them I wanted to speak to a manager and keep going up the chain of command. If that doesn't work then I'd be writing a VERY firm and direct letter as to what I wanted. Ending it with the threat of filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

I've been thru this type of thing many times and I don't settle for answers from the little operators that think they're God!!!

If this were me, I'd be in "I'm on a mission" mode and wouldn't stop till I got my money back. Plus, now it's more the principle of the matter than the actual money!!!!

Good Luck!!!!

Yea, I'd battle to the end and get MORE than that back for the hassle they put you through. YOU are the customer and they need to be making you happy. Fight this one. It shouldn't take all week. And the manufacturer should reimburse you and then fight the rest on their own. Insane!

Let it go. I usually fight for my money but sometimes the peace of mind is worth a few bucks. You want to fight all week for $26 bucks? That will work out to a few cents an hour.

That's one of the reasons I almost never shop online any more. Don't like going through the return process.

How much is your time worth? How many hours will you have to spend on the phone this week alone? And include all the other phone calls. Is it all worth the $26.00?
I get very annoyed with things like this and I would have cut my losses by now. But that’s just me.

I've been known to spend more time fighting over even smaller dollar amounts because I am a vengeful person and my principles will not allow me to drop it ;-)

Did you use your credit card to make the purchase? If so, you can make things so much easier on yourself by disputing the charges through your credit card. Let your credit card company do the arguing for you. I've gotten so many charges reversed this way. Good luck to you!

Id let it go and move on. In a few months you wont be any better or worse off without that money and you dont need the stress and fighting with them all over the holidays. Just count it as your donation towards keeping a business going.

BUT, Amanda I just wanted to comment about your post.
"$59 in shipping for a $129 item? That is ridiculous!"
Wel,l if it was just a pretty little necklace yes that would be outragous, but what about the on sale, bargain rate deal, for a large awkward shaped hard to package item? Wouldnt that make the cost of shipping higher? The price of the item makes no difference in what shipping costs. I have shipped $500 items that fit in a box from checks and it cost me $8. I have also shipped large printer drawers that I sold for $20 but cost me $50 to have padded, wrapped and sent priority mail.
So, without R. telling us what the item is, maybe shipping wasnt out of line and really has nothing to do with the price of the item she wanted to buy. It still sucks to lose that money, but its not worth the hassle to worry about it now.

Whose at fault here, FedEx or Walmart, or you?

Find out who is responsible for what and then go forward.
Just a thought.
