Hi - I hope this isn't too much of a stupid question... Anyway i have an old (used it 2 yrs ago) AVENT microwave sterilizer (which i have stored) ... I am having a new baby soon. I want to buy the new glass bottles (maybe evenflo brand) anyway do I still need to sterilize them? If so would you buy a new sterilizer or just use the AVENT one?
Many thanks mamas!

I would sterlize the bottles. It made me feel better too. I don't like to wash bottles in the dishwasher, because sometimes "stuff" gets on them and I have to rewash them again. Plus, it is not like they take them much longer to sterlize and they are done in about five minutes and you don't have to wait until a full load is in the dishwasher. I only used glass bottles and sterlized them every time I used them. Just wash out the old sterlizer, then run in through with no bottles in it with the water added and it will clean in all out. Good luck and Congrats!

Hi - I use the Medela sterilizing bags. You pour a little bit of water ( I use destile water) on the bottom and put it in a microwave for 3 minutes. I do wash everything prior placing it in the bag. I love it! Good luck with the new arrival. Those are exciting times.

Hi. I would use the sterilizer that you have. After all once to have had it in once its sterilized again. I used an electric sterilizer with my first son and it used to take an age to do, but the microwave ones are so much more conveniant, and i used def use mine again if i had a 3rd. I chose not to use the dishwasher as i never liked the bits that sometimes ended up on there. For the sake of a few minutes its nice to know that whats inside is clean and ready to go. I guess after reading other responses to just shows that everyone is different so just go with what you are comfortable with.

good luck with the new arrival.

Yes, sterilize them. You can either just boil them or use the sterilizer. They still make that same one (I actually have one I bought a year ago) so it's still up-to-date.

:)
Congratulations!

I re-used my Avent sterlizer for my 2nd child (which was 2 years after my first). No problems - did the same job. I also use the dishwasher to wash/sterlize the bottles.

I know you received plenty of good responses, but I just wanted to add my two cents. Most bottles/nipples/rings you only need to sterilize after you purchase and before you use them. If you are worried about the quality of your old sterilizer just boil a pot of water and leave them in there for 5 minutes. I use the medulla bags for my nipples and I use the playtex nursers which do not require to be sterilized. I also soak my bottles in very hot soapy water every time I wash them. I find that running them through the dishwasher is a waste of time since I'd have to wash them again when they'd come out dirty!! I hope my advice is helpful and good luck on your new bundle of joy.

Unless you give birth to a premi or sick child. Just wash you bottles well. Your handwashing and others handwashing is actually more important for the child and their health as long as they have been properly washed. Don't let bottles sit dirty for long periods of time and check crevices for hidden milk.

I was told by my doctor to sterilize the bottles after purchase, and after that, just use a dishwasher or really hot soapy water. After all, if you nurse, you don't sterilize your nipples.

In reality, sterilizing bottles and nipples is oldschool. I didn't do it when mine were little and that was a long time ago. Think of it, we wouldn't sterilize our own nipples, why would we sterilize bottles and nipples? Soap and water or a run through the dishwasher should be enough to sanitize a baby bottle. After all, they drop it, stick it in their noses, ears, on the cat, the dog, and anywhere else you can think of.
You CAN do it if you want to, but it isn't necessary.
JMHO, and the opinion of many physicians.

You don't need to sterilize bottles. It's more of a throwback to times when the water supply was more iffy. If you use a dishwasher that is plenty hot, or washing in hot is fine.

If it is not possible to use the old sterilizer just boil up a pot of water and use that. Amazing how things have changed between my son who is 20 and my daughter who is 2 lol!

One thing that I thought was the coolest thing (when I had my daughter) is the bags that you just put a tiny bit of water in and nuke the things you want to sterilize. I got them from the hospital while my daughter was in the NICU and they were made by that popular breast pump company... I can not think of the name though- sorry! Nice and easy and I could take it anywhere with me.... especially great when you are traveling and you want to have some room for your clothes too! lol It also works great on small toys, pacifiers etc.

Good luck with the new baby... get your rest while you can! lol Many blessings to you and yours!

You don't need to sterilize bottles at all...only sterilize the nipples before you use them. If you sterilize nipples more than once, you will cause damage.
