Hi, girls. Was wondering how you feel about sterilizer machines and if you use them, which one is good? I've been looking at the Advent Microwave Steam one, but a little concerned about the plasting in the microwave thing. ANyone know any info on that? The other one, electric one, is like $50 more. Thanks in advance
Jaymi

Completely unnecessary and possibly unsafe (like you said- plastic in the microwave). All of the sterilizers and anti-bacterial stuff is overkill and is causing more problems than they solve, such as strains of resistant germs. If you want, boil everything when it's new, then washing with mild soap in hot water or running through a dishwasher is enough for daily cleaning. The only other things I have found to be crazier and more unnecessary than sterilizers are warmers for baby wipes (maybe they need these in Alaska??)

My nurse friend asked me to touch the sterilized bottle once it came out of the machine...her comment was "now it's no longer sterile"... So, don't waste your money on a machine. Use a pot of water to boil or use the dishwasher.
There are so many products on the market that are virtually useless and/or a waste of money and space in the cabinets!!!

When i bought a set for my Medela pump it also contained bags that you can use in the microwave to sterilize. It only holds two bottles at the time, but it is definitely a space saver compared to the steam machines you can buy.

Not needed. For the first 3-4 months I would boil water to rinse them out and soak nipples unitl their immune system is better. By 3-4 months they also start to explore and put everything into their mouths. (ie: dirty little fingers, rattles, toys, all of which are not sterile.) I do believe in washing the toys that go in their mouth on a frequent basis but really kids have survived for decades without things being sterile. Soap and water is my motto.

Hi Jaymi,

I would highly recommend an electric sterilizer. Personally, I would be a bit skeptical about a microwave sterilizer. I had an electric one, I can't think of the make right now, but it worked great. Good Luck!

Save your money...boil water and let her bottles and nipples soak and then wash with soap and water.

As a mother of 3 boys, I have NEVER had a sterilizer. I can't justify the expense or the counter space lol. I have always used Medela Quick Clean Micro Steam sterilzing bags. You can find them at Target & Babies R Us for about $5 for a box of 5 bags (each bag can be re-used 20x). These go right in the microwave and sterilize in under 3 minutes. They are small, portable, reuseable, and FABULOUS!

Hi Jaymi

I used the advent one and it was great. I would go to a resale shop to get one, I know we have 2 or 3 at our shop and they are much cheaper than new and work just the same.

Have a blessed day,
D.

Ok so if I had to do it all over again knowing what I know now about the PBA and microwave situation…yeah I would boil them when they were new and then just run them threw the dishwasher there after. After all most bottles are PBA free now. I used the Playtex nursers with the drop-ins…LOVED them but I still sterilized everything in a pot of water on the stove for 3 months. But again if I ever do this over, I am skipping the daily boil, one less thing to do, I personally think with our first child we go totally overboard on things and somewhere in the middle of the chaos we all come to realize, our children will be fine, we are aren’t we?...lol….I hope this helps…
