Short Frenulum

my 4 week old has a short frenulum and latches on for breastfeeding, but it is really painful for me so I am considering getting it clipped. Has anyone had experience with this? One of our pediatricians says it's easy to do for a ear nose and throat specialist, and another doctor we talked to said it is a big procedure where they have to sedate the child (that doctor recommended to wait until he is 1year old). Any recommendations of doctors too in the area?

What can I do next?

I had problems nursing like that too. PLease call Lactation innovation, her name is Janet Talmadge. She's out of Naperville and an expert with stuff like this. She was a website too. Lactationinnovation, com. Good Luck!

My nephew got it clipped when he was really little and the procedure was not that big a deal my sister said. After that, he nursed GREAT she said! She's out of state though, so I don't have a specific doctor recommendation.

If this is also known as being "tongue-tied", my friend was in this situation. She also had inverted nipples, so between both things, her son could not get hardly any milk. They got it cut when he was less than 2 weeks old and I don't think that there were any problems and then he was able to breastfeed.

My daughter was born with the same issue and I waited because she could breastfeed. At 18 months, she couldn't babble let alone talk and her lack of tongue movement was causing her right cheek to droop almost like a stroke patient. Her teeth were not coming in as well. I was told by a dentist that it was because her tongue was not able to guide her teeth down from the gums properly. After her surgery at age 23 months, she started talking and cut 8 teeth the month after. I would not wait like we did because I felt like we were given bad advise to wait from 3 doctors and 1 dentist. The doctor we saw was Dr. Maddalozo from Children's Memorial Hospital at the Outpatient Center in Westchester, IL. He was very good.
