My soon to be four year old daughter has been battling Leukemia for almost two years. Valentine's day will be our two year mark. She is still taking chemotherapy every week & has until September before she will be done. I want to know why there is never any event or ceremony for childhood cancer. Lord forgive me but I get tired of hearing about breastcancer. My mom battled breatcancer, but what people need to remember is that an adult has lived their life, but a child who was only 21 months old and has to battle something like this with a chance of dying is horrible. No one seems to care about the furture children who could die of this nasty cancer. Why isn't there more awarness for childhood cancer? My daughter is in great hands with the "St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital". Does anyone even know that September is Childhood Cancer awarness month? I would like to start a yearly event to raise more awarness of childhood cancer, does anyone know how to help me get it started?

I have a 5-year-old daughter who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in May of last year. I understand exactly what you mean when you say you are tired of hearing about breast cancer. I have a dear friend who battled it and it's a horrible disease to have to face but I think it's nothing in the face of any childhood cancer. I'm glad to hear your daughter goes to St. Jude. We couldn't get in so we have a four hour drive to take our daughter for her chemotherapy. If you ever feel like talking I sent you my e-mail address. Don't take this the wrong way, but it's nice to know we're not alone.

Your daughter is beautiful. I know how frustrating it must be for you. I can not imagine having to walk your walk. I just had to let you know how much I admire what you are doing. I know that it is a mother's job to love and comfort their children, but you are willing to do so much more for your child. I am a school teacher myself, and I have to say that the world needs more parents like you that are willing to fight for their children. your daughter may not realize right now all that you do for her, but one day she will know how blessed she is to have a mom like you. You and your family are in our prayers!!

Hi C.,

I applaud you for staying strong through what must be a very tough situation and also for recognizing the lack of awareness for childhood cancers. I am the skin/melanoma state chair for Tennessee Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition. The object of our coalition is to reduce the burden of cancer in Tennessee. We work by increasing awareness, detection, and prevention of many different types of cancer. There is a division for cancers affecting children, (I have the melanoma division) and their objective is to advocate for children with cancer and improve their care at the time of diagnosis and treatment, as well as improve the quality of life of childhood cancer survivors through education, resources, and research. I will find the regional (east Tennessee) contact person and email you their information. If you would like to contact me for additional information, my email is ____@____.com husband returned from a year in Iraq about a year ago so I feel for you in that aspect too!

T.

*UPDATE* The TCCCC regional contact for children's cancers is Mary Winslow. Her email: ____@____.com I would ask her about your above question. Hope this helps!
