I don't know if you're still looking at responses... but I love the name Xavier. (It starts with an X! How cool is that?!) And you can call him "Zave" or "X-man"...

I also like Ezra and Miles.

Good luck!

There are plenty of internet sites with baby naming boards such as Ivillage.com. I couldn't really suggest a specific name because "unusual" may mean different things to different people, and I would also take the other two kids' names into consideration - I believe that the styles should match - meaning if you have two very classic names like Henry and Anna, trendier names like Preston and Dylan wouldn't go with them. My two kids are Kayleigh and Ian, they have Celtic style names - if I'd had a third child, a name like Leo or Lorenzo simply wouldn't fit with them - Griffin or Gavin would.

Good luck with you naming adventure.

We liked Marius for a boy. It is a Roman name. It is derived from the Roman Mars(the God of War) or the Latin root Mas (Male). My husband was a huge fan of the musical Les Mis and it is the name of one of the main characters. We ended up with a Noah and Joshua instead. lol

I suggest you look to your own family trees.Don't just look at first names, either. My husband's first name is Thayer, which was a last name several generations ago, his sister's first name (Meikle, pronounced ME-kul) is also a family last name as is our son's, Gryffin. Ask you family members about maiden names, first/middle/last names of great and great great grandparents, or even think about doing a little bit of research on Ancestry.com (no affiliation)--the first 3 days you get total access for free to try it out and you might find some long forgotten relative with an unusual name that you can revive within the family.

Good luck!

Well I named my sons all variant forms of my husbands name. Which is John. Not that they are unusual John Jr Ian Shaun. If I ever have a 4th boy I was thinking perhaps Ivan.

Also my sisters name is Carla and she names her son Carlo.

Perhaps a variant on yours or your husbands names.

I just met a baby named Shrader sp? I liked that as unusual

This website is great. You enter in 5 names that you like and it will give you a list of 20 similar names. Then you can further rate these names so that the site can then generate 20 more names for you to look at. And you can keep going and change the names in your list as many times as you want. You can also save the names if you sign up for the site. It was really helpful for me to create a list of names that I liked.

Take the letters or some of the letters from both of your names and mix them up. I liked Keegan (ball of fire) and Kiernan. Try to think of names that don't rhyme with anything. For example, Luke and Puke and things like that.

I have 5 little boys and we wanted easy not too off the beaten track names...it's funny because what we named our kids has now become more popular but still not the Michael or John's of the world...Our 9year old is Caden(now very popular, but back then we'd never known one), 7yr old Rhys(reese), 6yr old Peyton, 4yr old Gabriel, 22mo's Wyatt...We get lots of complements and so far never a repeat in the classroom...our runner's up names were Baylor, Taigue, Tait and Evrette. Good luck and enjoy that new little boy!

Congrats on your having a little boy. As a mom of two boys I know how fun it is! I named my boys Jeremiah David, and Luke William. Not completely unheard of but only once have I ever met another Jeremiah. I also liked Parker, Jackson, Elliott and Aidan. Again not completely unheard of but rare. Check out some websites with baby names. I remember coming across some really odd names that after a while I thought might have been cute. Oh yeah one of my fav. names ever (mostly because I'm a huge fan of one) is Joaquin, pronounced Wakeen, if you don't know the actor Joaquin Phoenix. I really like when people name their children traditional names that come from their own heritage. My husband is Mexican, I am American of Scottish descent, so it was a little hard for us. Since my son has a Spanish last name, I really wanted something that showed his Scottish heritage. I really like the name Eoghan (pronounced Ewan) but thought that would be too tough for most people to spell and pronounce. So we settled for the Anglicized version, Evan. There are tons of great websites to help you with the search. I would check those out. Good luck and congratulations, some of the best things that happen to us aren't planned!

My personal favorite boy's name is Forest. When choosing a name for my girl I read through a baby name book and wrote down all my favorite names and then her father vetoed all but one. I made sure none of them were in the top ten popular names for that year too.

Please don't make it too unusual or no one will know how to spell it. These days it seems everyone is going for so unusual that the names can't be remembered easily. It's okay if you have a small circle of friends but when job hunting (or for a business where customers call), it's critical that an employer/customer can easily read and pronounce it or else they won't pick up the phone to call him. Statistically proven!

I like babynamer.com

They have things set up nice a simple, with simple explanation of name meanings and origins....so you might check it out.

I like simple boys names that are not your everyday name, but not wildly unique either. You might consider a common boys name with a unique spelling too.

I also like boys names that end in the "an, en, on" sound for some reason...that's just me...but it seems like that ending sound goes with lots of last names.

I have one boy, Ethan, but if I had had more boys I would have chosen some of these names:

Rowan, Logan, Keaton, Tynon, Soran, Anden, Holden, Eran, Landon, Danon, Linden

Good luck finding one you both agree on!

Hi S.,

I'm partial to the Irish names, my son's name is Ryan Michael - not so unusual, but Ryan means "little prince" (and he truly is my little prince) and Michael is for my uncle who died in the Air Force -- a great man who I never knew but I wanted to keep his memory alive as my parents did for me.

I saw Kieran mentioned a couple of times -- a great name, and if you really want to make it unusual, use the Gaelic spelling, Ciaran -- I know someone named this and it's a great name and a great spelling.

One request -- don't make it too unusual that it creates a sore point for other kids to make fun of -- remember how mean other children can be! Don't be like all those Hollywood freaks who name their kids after fruit and whatever else fancies them at the moment!

Oh, by the way, I read someone's response to you who spent more time scolding you for not being married than helping you with your request -- to keep it light and clean, pish posh on that (hope I made you chuckle with that)! Marriage isn't all that... if you love each other and you love your children that's fine in my book, and I was raised Catholic (still am!). I am presently going through a very unpleasant divorce and am very down on marriage. Besides, didn't the Beatles say, "All you need is love"?

Good luck and have lots of fun!

I have family who have some pretty plain last names (jones, smith, miller). They too wanted unusual first names. They went with Irish names.
For boys: Declan, Dermot, Donal, Aidan, Sean (John in gaelic), Liam (William), Emmett, Eammon (Edward in gaelic), Fergus, Seamus (pronounced shay-mus it means James), Kieran (my cousin's name,he claims women love it).
How about Owen or Ian or Griffin ?

Another friend went with Diego (her husband is Spanish).

I know someone who named her son Christopher, but his nickname is "Kai".

Hmmmmmm don't know how you vote but Barack is always an option! And plain old John has become so rare it is now unusual!
Good Luck!!!!

What are your other children's names? If they begin with the same letter, how about another name with the same letter? Personally I think there are so many odd names are out there that you may stick out by having a classic name - classic to your place of origin - which is something you could research. How about a famous person from your ethnic history?

We like unusual names for our children as well and then we do a family middle name. We have three boys and I have been vetoed for my favorite name every time. I LOVE the name Kai (K-eye) or Kyden if you prefer a longer name. I know someone who named their son Kyler (like Tyler).

A cousin has a Kade and a Dane which I have come to like both of them as well. At one point she considered Grayson. One of my nephews is Keegan which was his dad's best friend's last name.

Hi S.,
I think you are the first person I've heard who wants name advice! I think you can do a search online for unusual or not commonly used names. It is hard to find names for boys that are unusual and masculine! My husband vetoed a lot of names b/c he thought our son would get "beat up!" Our sons names are Reid, Oliver, and Nathaniel. None of them are too common. I looked up the 100 most popular names and Nathaniel is #100 and the other 2 didn't make the list. You can also look at foriegn names. Nate's middle name is Kin, which is Japanese. Good Luck in your search. M.

I know the idea of giving your son an unusual name seems like a good one, but don't go overboard! As a teacher, I have seen kids be mean to one another over everything! Be very careful with your name choices because kids LOVE to make fun of names...don't give them any more ammunition! It's tough enough being a kid these days without the added burden of a crazy name to deal with. And, I've noticed, these unusual names are much tougher for a boy to live with than a girl. Just some food for thought. Good luck!

Unusual how? From another language? That might be a good place to start. If you know where your family and his family can be traced back to, you can look at names in those countries. I won't offer any name suggestions because that is highly personal, but I would start by searching online.

I have several friends who have named their sons their maiden names. That's a neat idea because otherwise your maiden name often just disappears from your life...In their cases that meant Jackson and Barden...that concept might work for you.

Let us know what you pick!! Congratulations on your baby boy! I know what it is like to have an unexpected baby...two of mine were huge surprises...but very much loved and wanted! I'm sure that yours will be as well. God has a plan for each and every baby, and although they might be surprises, they are never mistakes!
