Congratulations on getting certified through the school system. Ours is "reluctant" to certify my 3.5yr old who has actually been diagnosed by a Developmental pediatrician as being on the Spectrum.

contact your county ISD and ask if there are any support groups in your area. Even neighboring counties could help.

Hi S., my 15 (almost 16) year old daughter was diagnosed a couple years ago with aspergers. She struggles socially but I don't believe she had a proper diagnosis. Some sites I found useful were the Judson Center, Macomb or Oakland County Autism Society. Also there is Jack's place. You can always google it and find all kinds of things online. Stacey, This is tough. I have two kids that have autism. One autism one aspergers. It is hard to find support but I live in Northern Mich. I have found some groups through Community Mental Health to be very helpful. They had an anger management class jsut for autistic boys. Also there is a summer camp in Torch Lake that is run through CMH and YMCA for autistics. I believe they have to be 10 though. Sometimes the resource room teachers will have outside resources as well. A few of us up here have jsut found each other. The autism society of Michigan is a great place too. They have a lot of seminars that are really helpful. I recently went to a Temple Grandin (YOu must read her books) one it was very helpful. I'm so sorry to here about your son. I don't know anyone personally who has Autism. It must be really hard for you and your family. My name is B.. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist in the school setting; and, I am a trainer in the area of Behavior supports and strategies for students with ASD. I first want to say how great it is that the school is supporting you. There are some ways to help support him socially in the community. There are peer link programs that can carry over into the community and home. Also, if you need help in other areas, ASD is a lifelong developmental disability and there may some respite help through your local Community Mental Health Agency, as well as options through Social Security Disability. The biggest suggestion that I can make about teaching social interaction in the community is to do as much preteaching as possible through social stories and comic strips. Carol Gray is the author/developer of these ideas. Also, as many visual supports as you can give him. They do not have to be in pictures, they can be in words. Also, there is a program named Navigating the Social World by Tony Attwood that is helpful in teaching and recognizing emotions in yourself as well as in others. I hope I have been helpful. I have a 2.5 year old that is showing the signs of Autism. They put him in school once a week and they also come to my house to work with him once a week. They didn't diagnose him yet because they don't usually do that until they are 3 years old because as you know the spectrum is so wide that no two children are exactly alike...
I think he has the high functioning form. He doesn't point, feed himself with a fork or spoon, he takes my hand and brings me to what he wants instead of pointing, he makes eye contact when we are playing rough or rowdy but other than that he doesn't really respond to his name some times, instead of play pretending with toys he lines them all up in a perfect row. He organizes things by shapes and colors and is very visual. He's a very smart little guy but he's just lacking socially. I am looking into contacting a DAN doctor to see if they can help give me more information on special diets or anything that I can try to help him. I think you're a great mom for looking for all the support you can...I know its really hard to some times to get straight answers from doctors and what to do next.

J. here single divorced mom of two daughters with asbegers nine and eleven dx at the age of five and three the diagnosis was different then but, thier pediatrician sent me to macomb isd for testing Dr.s Do know Autism but, most,( dont quote me on this as u can tell its been a while since my daughters were dx) will send you else where for proper testing with qualified individuals. Macomb ISD if you arent comfy with the diagnosis that you got you can ask them where else you can go for testing, I have been with them for a long time and they have been wonderful with my family. I found a local Asperger's social skills group that was helpful with my 8 yr. old. I also get private therapy, and have gotten trained by an OT to do some therapy techniques ourselves at home for the sensory problems. You are lucky to get help from the school- ours doesn't recognize high functioning autism (at least in a gifted kid!) so we were unable to get any help there.

I'm about 38 weeks along waiting for my little princess to arrive. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I started my research on Autism. It's a big concern to me since so many children have been diagnosed in the past few years. My mother works for family practice Dr is Milford which his son has Autism so he has helped me understand everything from "they" think causes it to why so many drs have no clue in what it even is. Hi S. - I have two Aspberger's boys, 13 and 6. My middle son (11) is right on the border but actually fell to the emotionally impaired side. What kind of supports are you looking for and where are you from? You can always go to The Autism Society of America and see if they have a chapter in your area with more local links for you. (www.ASA.org) I'm always willing to chat if someone needs an ear or needs to vent. As you may ahve already heard, Autism (Aspberger's) only gets worse with age. The sooner you get intervention the better. You're doing the right thing by asking for help - good luck - S.
