Seeking "New Parent" or "New Dad" Seminar in Dallas Area

My husband and I are first time parents, and my husband got invited to a non-denominational Father's seminar on how to communicate with your child. Unfortunately, this particular seminar has some very mixed reviews. I believe one likened it to a cult. It makes me a little nervous, so I'm looking for alternatives. I'm very supportive of my husband's desire to attend something like this, and would be willing to attend something for couples, or find something for fathers and mothers separately. Does anyone know of any parenting seminars for dads or couples in the Dallas area that they can recommend? We're not currently affiliated with a religion, but are open to religious or non-religious seminars.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's great suggestions! We've already taken or registered for the CPR, child care, and child birth classes at Presby Plano (where we're delivering), but we're now looking into some of the parenting classes offered at Medical Center of Plano, as well. Thanks again!

The Medical Center of Plano has a lot of free seminars for new parents and also some classes that are very reasonably priced. I believe they are all listed on their website. Just a few events that my husband or I have tried out and thoroughly enjoyed are: Methods of Motherhood - 8 classes for new moms and baby (cost $50); New Mom Tea - once every month or so for new mom/baby and expectant mothers(free); Daddy Adventures - once a month outings for new dad's and baby (free). I have met a lot of mom's at these events which led me to some play groups for my son and I. I definitely recommend them to any new mom in the area.

My husband really liked the Boot Camp for New Dads at Medical Center of Plano. We also took Childbirth, Infant CPR, and Breastfeeding classes there. I joined Methods of Mothering after my baby was born and we are now in a Mom's group together over a year later.

Our church is offering: A Case for Kids Parenting Conference with Tedd Tripp and Paul Tripp - at Park Cities Presby Church in partnership with Providence Presbyterian Church. September 14-15

Tedd and Paul Tripp (shepherding a child's heart) are well known christian authors/doctors (PhDs rather than MDs I believe). The public is invited.

If you email me directly: ____@____.com in late Aug or early Sept I'll email you w/ specific info (as it becomes available little closer to Sept.) We'd love to include anyone interested. Welcome to parenthood, it's very exciting.

Which hospital are you delivering at? When we were taking our birthing classes through Medical Center of Plano, I know they were also offering a Daddy Boot Camp class that all the dads LOVED. It's doesn't have any type of religious affiliation, just teaches new dads ideas on bonding with baby and helping mom. Check with your hospital and see if they offer a similar program.

I second/third Medical Center of Plano. I delivered there 8 yrs ago and took their birthing, CPR and Methods of Mothering classes. I'm still friends with some of the moms from the MoM class. It was a great way to find moms with kids the same age who were going through the same issues. Once we became comfortable with each other and our babies we'd go out to lunch together and it was much easier being with a group of babies and moms. It was a great way to get back in the swing of things. The support was awesome.
I receive mailing from Medical Center of Plano and have seen Dad classes and Grandparent classes. On a religious note, Custer Road United Methodist Church has parenting classes - Raising Kids God's Way. I'm not sure which stage it's geared towards but you can call and find out.

Check with the hospital you will be delivering at or otgers around you. I work for the parent company of all the Presby and Harris hopsitals and I know they offer all kids of classes. You can go to www.texashealth.org and pull up each hospital for numbers and more info.
