Seeking Info on the Likelihood of a Baby Turning from Breach Position

Hi,
I am currently a little over 30 weeks and I had a sonogram this past Monday that indicated the baby is breach. I had a vaginal birth the first time. My OB indicated that there is about a 75-80% chance the baby will turn on it's own so hopefully I won't be faced with a C-Section. I wanted to see if there were any other moms out there who have been in this situation and if the baby turned on it's own or if there were any specific exercises, acupuncture, etc. you have done to help this situation. I am not really a fan of having the baby turned by my doctor. I have heard it is extremely painful and no guarantee. I look forward to hearing from you!

What can I do next?

Well I had a baby by c section because she was breach. dont' worry, it was a great to me. Because we knew ahead of time I didn't have to go through labor and I got to pick the day I wanted to have her and the healing wasn't bad in my opinion. Lonie

when I was pregnant with my son, it was a high risk pregnancy. At 36 weeks, we went for a stress test, Dr decides to do an amnio to see if he's ready enough to be born. Pull out the sono - low and behold he's a complete breach! AND, there was almost NO fluid. So Dr says, he needs to be born, we'll schedule a c-section tomorrow morning. So I spend the night in the hospital. at 5 A.M., they come to prep me for surgery, can't find his heart rate where it is supposed to be, pull out the sono and discover that he's no longer breach, so they induced instead. 19 hours (YUCK) later, he was here. But during that labor, he comes in and tells me that his patient next door, the baby turned DURING labor from regular to breach...

I had to have a c-section regardless of the baby's positioning, but my oldest was breach ONE week prior to my c-section and had turned by that time and I didn't even know it!

I was just watching this situation on Discovery Health--Special Delivery yesterday. The baby can still turn til 36 weeks so you still have some time. Don't worry about it right now. Just relax and let nature take its course!

My second child was breech and I was also very weary of the idea of turning him. He turned on his own around 36 weeks. I remember about 15 minutes of strong discomfort and had a sonogram 2 days later - he turned! So, think positively. I've heard many stories of the same success on it's own. Other friends have read about excercises and done them, but I'd check with your doctor first. I'm personally paranoid. :)

Good luck!

I highly recommend seeing Dr. Cindy Haggerton. She is a Gonstead Chiropractor. I was sent to her during my last pregnancy for another reason, but was amazed at her gentle techniques. Another mom in my Bradley class was sent to her due to breach position. She even had a C-Section scheduled, but Dr. Cindy was able to help her correct the problem with gentle exercises. Dr. Cindy is also a Doula. She was there for me when our 9lb. 4 oz. baby was born naturally at home in Decatur. She used gentle techniques during labor to help the whole process. She and her husband have an office in Bedford. Their website is www.family-wellness.com. They also have rave reviews on mamasource as well!

My baby was breech up until 37 weeks. I put an ironing board with one end on the couch and the other on the floor to make a slant board to lay on. It was a little awkward getting on it but my baby turned. If it works, you will know it. It was the weirdest feeling ever - literally like an alien inside your belly - not like regular fetal movements that you are used to. My baby was really large though so that drastic of a movement was startling - he ended up being 10lbs (first baby - born vaginally!).

My daughter was also breach. I was scheduled to go in and the doctor try to turn her when I was 37 weeks. The doctor told me that it could be painful and it could be stressful to the baby as well as myself and that I could wind up having to have an emergency c-section. She also said that if she did not turn, but handled the trying to turn her okay, I would have to have a c-section anyway. Well, I wasn't going to just sit back and do nothing. I remembered what my former doctor (who dang him, quit delivering babies by thne) told me about how to have a "exciting night of fetal entertainment." I stopped at the store and got a box of Fruit Loops (any high sugar cereal/food should do just fine) and ate enough to get her moving. Once she started moving and kicking good, I put my hand on the side of where I was assuming her head was (since it was hard and round and right between my ribs and painful) and applied some pressure. I did this until I got her head moved to the side and then I put my pregnancy belt up there to keep the pressure so that she wouldn't move back. I admit that this was nearly all day process, but it was better than a c-section or the chance of a c-section.

If I was not clear enough or you need me to explain it better, please feel free to send me a message. If you are nearby, I would be willing ot meet you somewhere and show you if that would be better/clearer for you.

Hope this helps. Good luck and congratulations.

I have had a c/s and a vag delivery and recovery from the vag delivery was much easier but the c/s wasn't too bad either. My last baby was breech and the doctor was able to turn him. It wasn't difficult or painful. My doctor and her partner had small hands and they helped each other with the version(turning the baby). They also have a lot of experience with it. In my opinion most doctors would rather do a c/s than anything else so they tend to not want to do the version, especially since it doesn't always work, may be risky for the baby and they might not be good at it. Besides you can schedule a c/s. Good luck, I agree don't stress, either way you get to take home a prize and both ways of delivery have their pros and cons. L.

Hi S.!
I had both my babies at Presby-Dallas with Dr Jennifer Freeman. Both mine were breech, which scared me so badly because of the C.

With my first (now 6 & 1/2), he was breech and she recommended a chiropractor and several other ideas. I visited 2 before I found the one I would use. She did some GENTLE turning of my body on a prenatal bed a few weeks before Braeden came. The doctor appointment was the next week and he had turned and stayed. I was able to have him vaginally 2 weeks early.

With Jacob, however, I tried the chiropractor and several other "tricks" but he didn't budge!! Two weeks prior to due date, I went in for my weekly appointment. She pulled the blanket up and bent in a few inches then came back quickly and said, "Alright Dad, let's get her down stairs now, I see feet!! We're gonna have this baby now!!" Jacob, was obviosly a C-baby.

That's their exact personalities!! Braeden is my people-pleaser, and Jacob is very stubborn. He will do ONLY what he wants to do!!

Good Luck- It's in God's hands!!

There is hope! My son was in the "Franks Breech" pos. till I was 33 weeks and then he turned and lodged his head in my pelvis. I was never more thankful for so much pain and waddling. Good Luck.

My daughter (now 2 1/2) was pronounced breach when I was about a month away from my due date. I tried laying with my head slanting down and feet up (didn't work) and then my doc tried to turn her - that didn't work either. I don't recall it hurting when he tried, but he didn't try too hard because everytime he attempted it, her heartrate would drop. So I had a scheduled c-section. BUT.... SURPRISE! When I checked into the hospital she was breach but about 2 hours later when I actually underwent the section - she had turned around! She's been sweet and stubborn ever since :)

I've had 2 kids vaginally and 1 c-section. My experience was the recovery from the vag birth was no big deal... recovery from the section was tough. Either was - you get a beautiful baby.

Good luck and congratulations!

S.,

You could also go to a chiropractor to get adjusted. My chiropractor uses the Webster technique which can help a baby turn. His name Dr. Kevin Smith, ###-###-####.

Both of my kids were breach until around 36 weeks. I did do the laying slanted with head lower than bottom and I did the frozen peas on the top of the belly. Not sure if either one worked. I have had a friend that did the acupuncture and her son turned. Try not to stress and enjoy the last phase of your journey, most babies do wait until the last minute.

Try not to worry! Both of my girls were breach towards the end. I think this is fairly normal. I didn't perform any tricks. They ended up turning on their own. However, I ended up with C-sections on both of them. I might be one of few but my experiences with C-sections were great. Had no problems and little pain. Don't let anything steal your joy at the end of pregnancy! Praying for you!
