Weird question, but my son's class is going on an overnight fieldtrip to Sutter's Fort. I am in charge of the trade store, and one of the items I am supposed to find for cheap is rabbit pelts. Does anyone know where I can find these for cheap? I have looked all over but can't find anything cheap enough. Any suggestions or knowledge would be appreciated. Not opposed to ordering online, but coudln't find anything there either. Thank you.

What can I do next?

I would also ask the person who gave you this assignment. If this is something that's done every year you should be able to find out where they've been purchased in the past.
Also, does it need to be real rabbit fur? Seems kind of pricey for a field trip! Maybe you could just get some rabbit-like fake fur at the fabric store and cut it into pelts.

I would use fake for sure, not only are they cheaper but some in the class may be opposed to real skins.

Cheap fake fur from the fabric store cut to look like rabbit? Or try American Science and Surplus on line?

Good luck!

Ewww, please use fake fur.

Trust me, it's not like those furs come from a hunter out killing rabbits one by one. They come from massive factory fur farms, mostly in China. I will not gross you out with the details but you can google it for lovely pictures of tortured animals living out their entire lives in barbaric conditions.

Just buy fake, it's easier, cheaper and you won't be supporting such a thoughtless and cruel industry.

Use fake fur.
Can't you use that?
Tell the school/Teacher... I mean, it is also a cost thing for parents etc.
And they must be able to be flexible about it.
If you have to get the fur, then what do the other parents have to get?
Did you have a choice?

If they are expecting you to find rabbit fur pelts, and I assume they do this every year... then, don't the have any idea of where you can get it????
Per previous years classes that had to do that?
Ask the Teacher.

Use fake fur.
If they allow it.

Have you tried a fabric store, where you can find "fake fur" and cut it into whatever sizes/shapes you want?

Hi T.-

My daughter went on a 4th grade field trip to Coloma and the little store up there sold them for (I think) $5 each. I have no idea how you would contact the store but I bet a 4th grade teacher would know since they all seem to go there.

Another idea would be to call Sutters Fort and ask if they have a source. Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

could ask the local DNR to see if anyone owns a rabbit fur farm or deals in the pelts. Then you could go from there for contacts. Its not often you can find raw pelts unless you buy in a large bale.

there are links to sellers on that forum

If you can't find any, try going to JoAnn's, or another fabric store, and buying a yard of furred fabric (fake fur fabric), and cutting out in the shape of rabbit pelts. That's probably what I'd do.
