My son is 3 months old and got admitted to the hospital for his constant coughing. To find out, he was diagnosed w/ pneumonia. We were in the hospital for 5 days. Doctor gave medication (Albuterol and other for coughing)which worked for the first 2 days, on the 3rd day he started coughing again. What should I do to relieve him from this pain?

So What Happened?

The same day I was seeking advise. I came home from work around 7:00p.m., my son experience the same thing-constant coughing for about 3 minutes straight. I got so worried about him, his face turned red (he was so uncomfortable). My house is right by the fire station, so we rushed him there and they gave him oxygen to breath better. My son was so exhausted from coughing, he just breathed it in, while lying on my lap. We ended up going to the doctor, my son had an xray-then showing that the buildup on his right lung was decreasing but at a slow rate. The doctor then prescribed Cephalaxin-to rid of the bacteria. He was already taking Erythromycin & Albuterol. From that time (10/2), we have been giving him his medication and his coughing has decreased. I also use saline drops to his nose and the suction throughout the day-which helps a whole lot. My son has been smiling and laughing more often, which makes me happy and relieved as well.

Hi E.,

I'm sorry your son is sick. He may need a follow up and may need further medication or a nebulizer. That being said, it is normal for kids to cough for a couple of weeks after recovering from a cold or flu or pneumonia. Keep his head raised in his crib (raise one side from underneath) and keep the room/house cool and use a cold air humidfier in his bedroom every night. This should help with his breathing and help reduce coughing.

Good luck!

There are a few things that leap to mind. First is something that is free, always good these days, that you can do yourself. Reflexology is the art of stimulating energy points in the body. I experienced it firsthand for the first time years ago when I had bronchitis that I could not shake. I was having a massage and the masseur started working on the bottom of my feet. I started hacking like crazy, but the next day I felt like a million bucks. Just apply slight pressure to the pad of the foot under the toes. This will work the chest/lungs. You can do it for a minute or so anytime during the day. Play with his toes. That reflexes the head and sinuses. The spot for the sinuses can be found on the side of the big toe by the base of the nail.

Next, find a chiropractor. Your little one is not too young or too small. I started this about the same time I discovered reflexology to treat asthma. It works. Here's a link with some articles. The birthing process can be hard on the little one coming out, so yes, adjustments are a good thing. It makes a great compliment to other therapies and you may find it takes care of what you need.

Acupuncture is another wonderful way to treat pneumonia/bronchitis.

You can also apply oil of oregano on his feet. Be sure to dilute it down in a carrier oil such as jojoba which penetrates the best or olive oil which has its own healing properties.

I would also recommend a salt lamp. Salt air is incredibly healing for repiratory ailments. It would be a great investment. They are quite popular and can be found rather easily. A friend of mine got one at TJ Maxx not too long ago. They provide nice soft light and make a great night light. Here's a link so you can see what I am talking about.

Peace and Love to the two of you.

Both of my children have had pneumonia several times, both as infants. It is serious, especially in a 3 month old. I agree with the other moms that you should definitely stay in close contact with your doctor - a follow up visit is prudent.

To soothe my kids when albuterol failed, we resorted to steamy showers, nasal irrigation if it moved to the nose, elevating one side of the crib (I put a textbook under the cosleeper mattress) and humidifiers. ... There really aren't great solutions, unfortunately. Hope your son feels better.

E.,

It sounds like your little one will end up like my toddler with "weather" (what I call it) asthma... which don't get alarmed is now more common in little ones...

My son is now 5 yrs old and he is slowly but surely growing out of it. Still on inhaler or nebulizer with albuterol but he is needing less and less every winter which is a great sign..

Good luck... keep your nebulizer handy and also buy a mist machine (I forgot what they are called---they are sold in any riteaide, walmart, kmart, etc..) mostly VICKS and I think Target has some cute animal looking ones.. you fill it with water and it blows smoggy mist in the room... during sleep time.

Get your little one usto a beanie, scarf and jackets... my son asks for his... it's only a hassle the 1st couple times around but when he feels cold he knows when he needs to become warmer with covering up and when he needs his nebulizer...

Good luck

He is only 3 months old, and with pneumonia... there SHOULD be a follow-up Doctor appointment, since he got discharged from the hospital.
If not, make an appointment.

Since he is so young and because he had/has pneumonia... don't take things willy-nilly... and follow Doctor's orders. You don't want to just experiment with things, hoping it will help or lessen his discomfort. He is too young... and pneumonia is serious.
It takes time to fully recover from. More than just 2 days.
If you feel the Albuterol is NOT working... or anymore, you MUST tell the Doctor. They don't know the condition of your baby or the effects of the medicine, unless you tell them. If you don't tell them, they will assume your baby is fine.

Albuterol is fine... that is what I was given once for the same reason. But I also have asthma, and take it when I need too. I even had to take it when I was pregnant with my 2nd child. Its fine... Albuterol is a muscle relaxant for the bronchial airways.... to help with breathing etc.

ASK YOUR PEDIATRICIAN and take him in for a follow up appointment... if his symptoms changes or returns or he gets a fever or anything different... you need to have him looked at.
AND if he is worse, take him to the ER.

AND make sure he is hydrated... feeding him ON DEMAND, no matter how often, 24/7.

All the best,
Susan
