What you are doing is so dangerous it isn't even funny. Get him to a doc, ASAP. SOMETIMES MEDICATIONS ARE NOT NECESSARY NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU *WANT* THEM!
Abuterol is for asthma - what you are describing doesn't sound like asthma. Please, you are playing with fire here. Stop and consult a professional.

Just please, take him to the Doctor, ASAP!
Guessing what he has will NOT help, at all. And giving him medicine when you do not know what is wrong with him, will be more harmful than helpful.

It could be asthma, RSV, Bronchitis, a bacterial infection, Pneumonia, or any other thing.

He needs a proper diagnosis and treatment. He is very young, to have a cough like that be unattended or not treated.

Don't give him albuterol for a cough. Are you talking the inhalent?? He is only 8mos old, please, please take him to the dr.

A productive cough is good - you want the mucus. But, he is only 8mos old and should be seen by a dr.

I'm going through the same thing right now. This can be very serious, so please call the dr., go to urgent care, hospital, whatever - just have him seen asap.

take him to the doctor.. he is so young I believe that cought meds.. shouldn't be given to children under 2 years old. also he may have broncitous.. my daughter had that once.. I hope he feels better and try and get him to the doctor today for a check up.

In a previous post, you state you are going to take your son to the doctor and you're concerned that he may not be given medicine. You state another family member was given albuterol. Are you using this albuterol, that was not prescribed for your son? If so, you can do more harm than good. NOT ALL COUGHS NEED MEDICATIONS. If this one does, let the professional (doctor) do the prescribing. That's what they went to 8+ years of school for. Good luck.

Not sure if this was prescribed for him but this is typically used to open the airways during difficult times of breathing. My son has the inhalant form for allergy induced asthma attacks.

Are you self-prescribing albuterol for your infant?? If that is the case, stop immediately! Medicine is not to be guessed at by uneducated novices. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but that is why we have doctors. They have medical education and experience behind their belt, and we do not. Take your son to your pediatrician immediately and get a knowledgeable diagnosis and then go from there.

You should NEVER give your child medication like that that isn't prescribed. You could be doing so much more harm than good. I'm serious...you are putting your child in grave danger. Knock it off now and take him to a doctor. Follow the doctor's advice...What you are doing is NOT responsible parenting. You are not a doctor, not a pharmacist and have NO IDEA what you are doing...

I have to echo what everyone has said already - I'm an asthmatic, and my albuterol, which I carefully dose out according to my doctor's instructions, is ONLY used in acute emergency asthma attacks, and can still cause increased heart rate. Without a dosage and doctor supervision, I can't imagine what it is doing to your 8 month old. Albuterol is an extremely powerful drug, and most asthmatics are being weaned off of it, because over time it can cause the build up of scar tissue in your lungs.
GO TO A DOCTOR! If he doesn't prescribe albuterol for you kid (which he likely won't), use grandma's remedies - warm steam showers, a cool mist humidifier, some vicks vapo rub, or eucalyptus oil in the bath, and TIME are good recommendations for easing symptoms.

I have to reiterate what everyone else is saying; don't ever take someone else's prescription. not only is it dangerous but it's illegal. And giving meds to your son that were not prescribed to him at this age is even more dangerous. see a pediatrician and get him checked out so the medication matches what he needs, if any. often a cough doesn't need meds and there are many other things you can do to provide comfort; raise the crib mattress slightly so he's sleeping at an angle, use a humidifier, etc.

This is a strong medication to be playing with! Just because he has a cough does not mean he has anything wrong with his lungs. See a doctor! My 8 month (almost 9) has had a very nasty cough for 10 days and the doctor says his lungs are clean. We have to wait it out. Use a humidifier in his room. Prop him up by putting a pillow under the head of his mattress. Push fluids and push fluids and push fluids. No cough syrup, no inhalents, nothing. If it's bad enough, your doctor may give you an infant decongestant but that's doubtful. Doctors don't like giving that kind of meds to kids this young.

Absolutely not! Albuterol is not for coughs. He needs to cough himself, naturally, and expel the mucus on his own. His body is producing it, and his body needs to get rid of it. I'm not sure where you got the Albuterol, but I doubt any doctor worth his weight in gold would prescribe that for A) an infant cough and B) a child w/o asthma or breathing difficulties. Please make an appointment with his regular PCP and do what he or she says. If you are unable, for whatever reason (have to work, no money for a copay, etc) to take him in, try some home remedies like a humidifier in the room, some vapor CREAM (not Vicks vapor RUB) on his chest and throat area, lots of rest and plenty of fluids. That's probably, most likely, all the doctor will tell you anyway, but it never hurts to be sure. Better safe than sorry. And get rid of the Albuterol. IMO

He needs to throw it up instead of swolling it... albuterol is mostly for asthma patients... albuterol is to open up the lungs and bronchios...

I believe Albuterol can cause heart attacks if over-used. It is a strong prescription drug for use only on people with asthma, and a little goes a long way. Stop immediately and seek your doctor's advice if you have one. Otherwise, use a humidifier, elevate his head by elevating the mattress just about 2 inches, and give him plenty of breast milk or formula to drink.

My daughter did the very same thing at one point, but we found that giving the albuterol at the first sign of any type of cold or flu that is starting to go into her lungs has helped cut down the amount of time she spent fighting the cough afterwards.

That said, she was quite a bit older than your son. You might want to take him to the doctor for a follow up and to see if there is anything else they can recommend instead of albuterol. You might also want to put the shower on very hot and just sit with him in the steamy bathroom. We found that hot vapor worked better than the cold humidifier sometimes. It's just sort of hit and miss.

albuterol will calm his coughing and relax the inflamation in his air way. my daughter takes it when she is ill via a nebulizer. is this a medication prescribed to him or another child? if it is his then you should use it as directed too so and then wean him off after the illness i gone. if this isnt his medication then you should take him to the dr. he sounds like he would benifit from the 3 day oral steroid but not everydr will prescribe it. good luck!
