K.,
I've heard this same complaint from many women over the years who have been seeing a male OB. It's difficult to feel understood by a man who doesn't have a clue what you're actually going through. I can remember sitting in my doctor's office when I was 15 years old complaining about my excrutiating cramps every month, only to be told by him that it was mostly in my head. Turned out later, during labor and delivery of my first child, that I have what's known as an irritable uterus. Not only can it cause severe cramps during menstruation, but it also caused unpredictable contractions that were too difficult to time during labor.
I have much preferred seeing a female OB/GYN and the one I've been seeing for the past several years is actually a certified nurse midwife. She's been voted by readers of Dallas Child magazine as the best nurse midwife for the past several years. Her name is Susan Akins and she has an office at Baylor downtown and also at Baylor Mesquite...very convenient. The name of the practice she's associated with is called Woman's Health Alliance. Or is it Women's? Oh well, they are listed on this website so shouldn't be hard to find. She really takes the time to talk and listen to what's going on in your life. During a well woman exam she is concerned with the whole woman, mind, body and soul.
