Seeking a Hair Conditioner Recommendation for Infants

Hi, My baby gets a bath everyday and I am starting to think that I should use a hair conditioner on my baby's hair. I use shampoo every other day to help prevent drying of the hair but think a conditioner may be a better solution. Any recommendations for a hair conditioner for a 9 month old? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi Jennifer! Honestly, I just used Suave conditioner on my baby's hair. I'd use baby shampoo to wash her, but just a little of the Suave conditioner (or even V05) on her hair just to make it easy to comb (as well as a little softness) and never had any problems with it.

Hope this helps!

Try cutting down to bathing your baby about 2-3 times per week. Babies do not need constant bathing. The water will only take away from natural oils, and dry out the skin. If your little one needs any cleaning between bath days, use a damp cloth to clean the soiled area! Good luck with your precious one!

I would opt for a conditioning baby shampoo. I wouldn't put conditioner on my baby. A better option would be a childs detangler.

**Hey, you know what else is found in anti-freeze? Water...yep plain old water! Ignore the hype like 'antifreeze in shampoo' or 'formaldehyde in Mt. Dew'...these are ignorant statements by people with no understanding of the molecular differences from one chemical to another, often with similar names. If your baby is dry, use a leave in detangler, if baby is not...don't. It's pretty simple...however so many people will try to make you paranoid that anything you do will be bad for your baby! Use your mommy instincts, that's why God gave them to you!

Check out my blog www.lesstoxicbeauty.com, under hair conditioner. I review natural products that are low on the scale on the Environment Working Group website (www.safecosmetics.org), so all of the products on my blog are a 0-4 (0 the least toxic; 10 is the most toxic). I have used all of them myself and my 4 year old. The prices I paid for each product is included and whether I had to buy online or was able to find it at a local store. I have children's soap, bubble bath as well. I have reviewed 6 conditioners thus far.
Also, it is not true that if you use a natural baby shampoo you will not need conditioner. Truly natural shampoos don't have chemicals that soften the hair, so if you are using a shampoo that claims to be natural yet leaves the hair soft, there is a good chance it may not really be natural, it's all in the marketing. Just because it says natural on the package really doesn't mean much nowadays.

you are right a conditioner would be a better solution, the baby shampoo is quit drying to the hair and if she has alot of it you want to keep it heathy. Just take a tiny bit and put it through the ends of the hair. gently rinse. it is okay for her hair to feel silky, that is what you want especially if it feel dry. I just use a basic conditioner, nothing fancy. Goodluck

I LOVE Auusie Sun-touched Shine Conditioning Shine Spray. It comes in a purple spray bottle at Walmart. I spray it on before I brush both my kids (boy and girl) hair. I love it because (1) - you spray it on and don't rinse so don't have to worry about getting in their eyes; (2) - it gives their hair a beautiful shine; (3) it takes out any tangles so it doesn't hurt so much when I brush their hair; (4) it smoothes down hair sticking up from "bed head". I don't always use it right away, but spray it on before we leave the house.

I Always condition - you can never have "too healthy" of hair!

9 mos. and needs a salon treatment? Don't risk drying out the scalp. Babies have their own built in 'conditioner'. Their skin is already soft, right?
I would be very wary of using average assembly line products off the shelf of every store. If you want to shampoo a baby, then I would strongly encourage using something organic and natural. Nothing with propilyn glycol. That's what's found in anti freeze.

I have found the Sauve's shampoos and conditioners for children work well. They have an entire line for children, come in a variety of kid loving scents and are relatively inexpensive. None of my three children have ever complained about the soap buring their eyes. The even have a spray in detangler too.

I should mention that between my three girls they all have diffent types of hair. The oldest has the thickest hair you have ever seen, the 7 yr. old has straight hair that looks knotty if I don't use conditioner and the 2 year old still hardly has any hair at all. The Sauve products work well for all three of them.

If you are using natural products that are gentle for babies, you should not need conditioner.

I'm not sure that you can use a conditioner on a baby nor should it be necessary. You might try and see if Johnson's makes a 2-1 for babies.

we use California Baby, shampoo and conditioner. it's really nice, has no nasty chemicals in it, and it's super gentle. my husband also uses it when his scalp gets irritated and it makes him stop itching (he's an electrician/lots of housing materials falling in his hair all day). it also smells great, a little minty. If I were you, and any other smart momma reading this, I'd stay away from the likes of Suave, Johnson and Johnson, etc., just look up the chemicals in those shampoos ladies and see what's going on your baby's skin. Target carries the California Baby, so it's easy to find. Keep up the good work with the nursing! :->

Jennifer,

My doctor has always told me that children this age do not need baths everyday that it actually does more harm than good. That the bath water will actually dry out there skin and hair and that children this age do not sweet so three times a week is plenty. My first born had eczema would break out severally if he took to many baths. So if your child hair is drying out maybe it from taking a bath to much and if cut back then you would not need to use a conditioner.
