Daughters Hair Care

My deliemma is this. My youngest daughters hair is very fine and it gets snarled very easily and quickly. Also when I wash it, it is very dry and brittle though I don't wash it every day. Usually 3 times a week because I know that it will dry it out more. Its actually seemed to just get this way. I don't know if it is because of the cold weather but I don't rmemeber it being like this when she was littler. I was just wondering if anyone has this problem and knows a good shampoo that they use for their girls hair or use for their own hair that helps with this. Also that isn't very expensive if at all possible.

What can I do next?

Hi L.
I have the same problems with my two girls. I use suave for kids 2-in-1 shampoo, and then suave for kids conditioner after. I comb it when they get out, and put the older ones into a braid (the yonger ones isn't long enough.) In the morning I spray them both with the suave for kids detangler spray. It takes the waves out from the braid, and the mattieness out of the younger ones hair. There really are never any knotts. I only wash their hair a couple of times a week, too. Hope this helps! ANd just keep thinking...soon they will be old enough to deal with their own hair! =)

My daughter has very fine, brittle hair & our hairdresser told us not to use any of the baby shampoos because they have alcohol - I've used the Suave 2in1 for quite a while and it works very well. We were also told not to wash her hair everyday which we had been doing.

Suave 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner works great and is inexpensive.

Hi! I have 2 daughters: 7 & 10. I have had the same issues with them at times too. I find that using a dry leave-in conditioner from the back of the neck down works wonderfully. Good luck! BTW you can buy a tube of it for about $5-$10 and it will last over a month...only need to use a little at a time. :)

Dear L.,

They have spray leave in conditioners that work great. Make sure to just use it on the ends because if you spray the root area it may appear greasy. Also when she goes to sleep see if she will allow you to put a loose braid or pony tail in it that will cut down on the tangling while she is sleeping. My daughter used to wake up with a big knot in the back of head every morning from sleeping so I did this and it helped. She has a lot of hair but it is very fine so no matter how many times I brushed it it was always knotted. She is now 19 and has a beautiful head of hair so I wouldn't worry about it as she grows it will become more manageable. I am sure Suave make something that is not to costly. Good luck!!

One things that has helped my daughter with the same issue is sleeping on a satin pillowcase. Flannel pillowcases, while cozy, were the worst! That and keeping it braided at night really helped. We also finally sprung for a salon shampoo/conditioner made for curly hair which has made a huge difference but is a little pricey. (Her hair is straight but the texture similar to curly hair according to our hairdresser.) Your hairdresser might have some ideas too. Good luck!

When we moved to upstate NY I noticed my hair was horrible with the onset of cold weather. It would break, come out in clumps, and get tangled very easily. I use Arbonne's shampoo and conditioner and then I use the Before Sun Hair Protectant. It works great as a detangler on wet or dry hair and contains SPF as well. The combination has really helped to make my hair healthy again.

Let me know if you'd like more information.

Hi L.,

I recommend that you see her pediatrician to rule out thyroid problems.

Best wishes,

try johnson and johnsons leave in conditioner in the aqya tube. I got it at target for like 3 or 4 dollars and is great for detangling my sons super fine knotty hair. can work through after you shampoo her with your fingers and then if want a little comb to really get the knots out. can do leave in detangler in mornings before styling. good luck. It smells nice too!

Hi L.,

I don't want to worry you, but suddenly brittle hair in children or adults can be a sign of a medical problem. Please contact your family doctor, even if just to rule out the possibility of an illness.

Hugs,

Johnson's no more tangles is great for after the bath to brush the hair... Also, washing it less often helps the hair maintain natural oils and it should help the brittle issue... Hope this helps! Good luck. i don't know of a great shampoo...

My daughter's hair is fine and dry and I tried Suave kids all in one shampoo based on another mom's recommendation. I think it works great, makes her hair nice and soft and less tangles. After bath, I also use Johnson & Johnson no more tangles.

I have the same thing with my daughter - lots of fine, easily snarly hair. Best success I have had is with Pantene shampoo and conditioner - straight hair formula. After I wash and detangle, I try to braid before bed. Keeps the hair from getting knotty in the night. You could also try combing conditioner through it, then rinsing (always with water running from roots to ends).

I cannot wait until mine can do it herself!

Hi L.,
Commercial shampoo's contain formaldehyde, so I recommend stop buying them. Check out some shampoo's in the health food store. You might also considering installing a charcoal filter into your shower head, which removes chlorine. It's very easy to do.
Hope that helps you.

My son's hair is curly and coarse/dry, like mine. It forms dredlocks in the back if it gets too long! We use kids Suave shampoo-conditioner (all-in-one) and that works well (I have used it in MY hair which is long, and it works well enough for me in a pinch). For dry and brittle hair, you can try washing it less - we usually wash our son's hair once or twice a week, and the other bathtimes it may or may not get wet which is fine. (I don't wash my hair every day either). Also we use a suave spray-on detangler, right after his bath and do lots of combing. The combing/brushing will loosen up oils in the scalp and that's good to maintain healthy hair. You're not supposed to brush wet hair, just dry hair, I think. We wet his hair in the mornings and use the spray-in detangler then too. I think your daughter is old enough to try a grown-up conditioner. I've had good luck with Suave products (inexpensive), Pantene (middle price). Use a conditioner for dry (or curly, which is usually dry) hair. Also I like Paul Mitchell The Detangler OR The Conditioner, but that can be more expensive. Hair can change over time, too, so it may not be a medical mystery (as posted below) - my hair went from being straight and very blond until I was about 7, to becoming extremely curly, dry, and enormous starting at about 7 (as an example).
