I have an 8 year old son with autism and adhd. I am looking for a doctor that has knowledge in this area. My son currently takes straterra and clonodine but I don't think it's working. Please help.
I wanted to thank all of you for the great information. My son is currently seeing Dr. Rao and things are going great. We are still in the testing process but Dr. Rao has put him on many different supplements to balance him out. We've already see some positive things in my son's speech and behavior. Thank you.

I would recommend Dr Rao. My son who is 7 yrs old now, was alomost non verbal 1.5 yrs back. Attention/focus was another big issue and we struggled to teach him anything.
He has come long since we started seeing Dr Rao. Dr Rao treats kids bio-medically. So we resolved attention problem without getting our son medicated and we are making great progress in speech too.
Good luck.
Dr. Mary Ann Block at the Block center in Hurst has been a wonderful help for my family. We have been with her for 5 years.
Unlike most doctors, Dr. Block is a doctor that is not about medicating symptoms/behaviors and to just make the symptoms/behaviors go away/ignoring what caused the symptoms.
She is all about finding what is causing the symptoms/behaviors to help fix the problem. She uses biomedical treatments including, if needed, diet changes. She has access to testing for heavey metal toxicity, allergies and others. She also has access to genetic test that can help see if you child has a predisposition for not being able to flush out toxins that could be adding to the issues.

We suspect my son might be on the autstic spectrum. I've had several friends refer us to the Child Study Center in Fort Worth. http://www.cscfw.org Neurodevelopmental and behavioral pediatricians staff the program.
There is quite a wait to get in (our appt is in late Feb (approx 3-4m wait). Best wishes to you.
My daughter has struggled with adhd for years! at one point the doctors did diagnosis her with autism...but she is just highly sensory sensitive. I love Dr. Arnie Mech's office in Plano, TX. ###-###-#### The first appt is about 2-3 hours long. Many people are turned off by the length of the first appt...but this was my 8th doctor for my daughter..and the ONLY one who diagnosed her correctly and thus medicated accordingly. The first appt is long, as you are waiting for Dr. Mech to review your paperwork. I was not happy while waiting!! But once the doctor walked in...he seemed to have really reviewed the 12 page new patient questionnaire. It was like he knew my daughter's symptoms inside and out! I remember leaving there in tears and totally feeling relieved...like someone finally figured her out! After the fist appt...you can opt to see one of the PA's at the office. This will shorten your appointments to about 30 minutes. Stephanie is our favorite. We have been going there for years! She is the best. My daughter used to take Straterra. It was not successful for her. She also could not wake up in the morning taking that Clonodine. She is currently taking Focalin for her ADHD. Good Luck! P.S. if you have a doctor you are thinking of, let me know their name. I may have been there and would be happy to share my experience. P.P.S. May I recommend a good book for moms like us with children struggling with challenges....Dana Buchman "A Special Journey". It is GREAT and really helped my husband and I get through the diagnosing process...and helps your whole family adjust to things and understand!
We are taking our son to Dr Elterman at Medical City (off 75 and Forest Lane), and there is also Dr Sperry in that group who specialize in ASD's and ADD. Their phone number is ###-###-####. Dr Elterman had seen our son at 8 months for another issue, but I have talked extensively with Dr Sperry's assistant, and highly recommend him for your son. (We use the valet parking for bldg C, and then walk through to Bldg A. They are in Ste 307 of Bldg A, directly above the "carousel" on the ground floor.) I believe the group practice is called Dallas Pediatric Neurology Associates. I have also talked with our Pediatrician about General Pedi's who might specialize in treating kids with ASD's/AD(H)D, but they did not know of anyone who does, so my recommendation is to stay with your Pedi, and see Dr Sperry for the neurological aspects.
HTH!

Dr. Rao in Plano is wonderful and very current with biomedical treatments for autism and ADD. Also you may want to contact my sil through my nephew's website www.camsvoice.com. He is a 6 year old with autism currently in recovery.
Removing chemicals from your home is also essential. You can visit www.saferforyourhome.com/texas to learn more.
Good luck,

Just wanted to chime in & say that we too see Dr. Elterman (my daughter has seen him since she was about 8 months old), and have recommended that practice to family & friends. My daughter was seen by Dr. Sperry during a hospitalization, and he is very kind. We have friends who see a female doc at the practice (name?), and they have been very happy with her. Dr. Elterman is now only taking new patients with epilepsy (at least that's what my sister was told when making a new appt for her child recently, she saw & liked Dr. Sperry). Best of luck, and I hope you are able to get the support you are looking for.
