My son had a blue back ground, and he wore a red, white and blue polo shirt. We will see how they come out.

Wow! I have to say there is a lot of over thinking here! We've never had school pictures that looked like anything more than just a mug shot...

Anything but blue. Gray, brown, green, yellow....whatever looks good on him.

work with the color wheel on this one: the opposite of blue is orange & will stand out the best.

If orange is not an option, then go with the next adjacent color....yellow or red.

Moving on, a neutral will also work....black, white, earth tones. (think of the sky & earth) Light blue will wash out, as will light green. Darker tones might work. & remember to choose a color which will work with his skin tones.

The ONE background I hated was the purple! It was soooo intense.

Almost anything except blue. Grey looks nice, or red

My older son wore a dark blue shirt on a lighter blue background. I haven't seen the photos yet to know how it turned out. I let my kids pick their own clothes and background, so the risk of a floating head is a possibility. Hasn't happened yet though.

My younger son chose a multicolored lights-on-water background and wore a t-shirt with a tuxedo print on it. He's classy like that. Heh.

I like for school photos to reflect everyday reality and my kids' personalities, so I don't stress out about them at all. So long as they have a clean face, I'm good.

I've always started with the shirt and then picked the background. Any chance he's be willing to change his mind based on his shirt?

However, to answer your question, I think probably grey. Our school doesn't offer tan, but that should also work. I would stay away from the bolder colors - blue, green, red. Yellow might work. It's really hard to tell form the forms the school gives you, but you could try holding it up next to a couple of shirts.

It depends,
My son has super blonde hair and a blue background always looked nice to bring out the color of his hair and blue eyes.
Depending on your son's coloring, it might be wise to avoid anything stark white. You want his face to be the main focus.
I would go with something that isn't too stark in either direction.

Just my opinion.
